Boutique to Benefit Cancer Center Held at Hyatt on November 2
November, 2006 - Issue #25
Have you ever noticed the slogan "Tell Someone" while watching television or listening to the radio? Today, this tagline is becoming more familiar in hopes of heightening awareness about cervical cancer.

Tell someone: this simple yet powerful action is what a group of local residents and book club friends are doing by hosting a celebration of life boutique in their dear friend Kathryn A. Goldring-Fromberg's honor. The event was created to heighten awareness about cancer and Kathy's work for finding a cure for this disease.

Kathy, a resident of Stevenson Ranch, battled a rare sarcoma, specifically, leiomyosarcoma (LMS), which was originally misdiagnosed as a fatty tumor in her back nine years ago (six months after the birth of her daughter, Dena). She passed away in July after her heroic five-year battle with this disease.

On November 4 at the Valencia Hyatt, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., the most outstanding selection of unique must-have boutique items will be available for sale to benefit Kathy's favorite nonprofit organization. If you are craving designer bags, Bed-head PJs, pashminas, designer jewelry, kids toys, children's books, designer clothes, personalized stationary, luxe paper gifts, beauty products and household and decor items, this is the place. In addition, UCLA doctors will be there to speak with attendees, and in the afternoon, cocktails will be available for everyone to toast the spirit of life and the holidays. Hint: Getting your holiday shopping done early while benefiting a good cause like this is a fantastic reason to gift yourself with that bag you'll be eyeing!

And now more specifics about that good cause I was mentioning... All funds raised will benefit UCLA's Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center's Sarcoma Program. According to Penny Amescua, director of events at UCLA's Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center (JCCC), "the UCLA Sarcoma Program is in large part a result of Kathy's vision. She was determined to establish a comprehensive program for sarcoma patients at UCLA featuring world-class care and cutting edge research. Kathy's tireless fundraising efforts yielded thousands of dollars in philanthropic support needed to launch the program in Spring 2005." The UCLA Sarcoma Program is an interdisciplinary collaboration at the JCCC bringing together physicians and investigators from a range of medical and scientific disciplines to create coordinated systems of research and patient care for sarcoma patients. Under the joint direction of Fritz Eilber, M.D., and William Tap, M.D., the UCLA Sarcoma Program provides innovative multi-disciplinary treatment for adults and children with sarcoma at any stage of the disease.

Pamela Sprott, a friend of Kathy's and a cancer survivor, believes that Kathy's efforts with the UCLA Sarcoma Program saved her life. "I was told by another surgeon that I had an 'inoperable' recurrent pelvic tumor. I immediately came home and called Kathy, hysterical. She calmed me down and said to go to Dr. Eilber for a second opinion. I was in surgery two weeks later at UCLA to remove the 'inoperable' tumor under Dr. Eilber's skilled hands."

Kathy definitely made a difference and "Kathy's Club" believes there's no better way to honor Kathy and help current/future sarcoma-diagnosed individuals than by sharing her story, informing us about UCLA's Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center, and celebrating life together at "Kathy's Club" boutique. Hope to see you there!
