Put your Best Face Forward
October, 2011 - Issue #84
Autumn is the time to repair the damage caused to your skin during Summer. You should change your facial cleanser to one with exfoliants to remove dead skin cells. Before you apply your makeup, use a rich moisturizer and apply a vitamin C serum. Vitamin C helps repair sun-damaged skin and reduces fine lines, wrinkles, age spots and freckles.

To prevent dry skin, exfoliate with body scrub and apply lotion immediately following a shower. You can easily make your own body scrub with ingredients found in your kitchen. One that works well for me is a mix of one-half cup of Epsom salts, one tablespoon olive or canola oil and a few drops of citrus juice. Apply to the dry areas of your skin, rub gently in a circular motion and rinse clean.

As suntans fade, it is important that we change our summer foundation and facial powders to a lighter shade for autumn. You should always test the foundation on your skin before you buy it. Make sure you have good lighting; natural light is best. Let the foundation sit on your skin for few minutes. At times, the color of the foundation will change when it comes into contact with our skin's natural acids.

For blush, try an iridescent shade in pink, peach or coral. Apply it to the sides of your cheekbones for a luminous effect. If you prefer a more natural look, apply a soft pink along the apples of your cheeks.

You can still wear bronzer throughout the fall. Choose a matte finish and apply it evenly over the cheekbones, chin and forehead. This will give you a sun-kissed, healthy look. A bronzer with shimmer should be used sparingly as a highlight. Choose a shade with a slight iridescence for a soft luminous look on your cheekbones. Bronzer in powdered form applied with a brush will give you more control than a cream. Remember - for all bronzers, less is more.

For lips, go bold with red lipstick. Anyone can wear red; you need only find the right shade to complement your skin tone. If you are feeling more demure, try a lip color in soft pastels or neutrals. Nude lips will bring out the color of your eyes.

For eyes, autumn is all about warm, earthy colors. You can go with warm shades of deep purple, chocolate brown or mossy greens; stick to softer with shades of beige and pink; or go bold with bright green and purple. To add a bit more drama to your evening makeup, add a shimmery gold in the inner corners to help illuminate your eyes. If you want to make your eyes look bigger, add white eye shadow topped with black liner to open them up. Soft pink eye shadow will give your face a warm, soft glow. You can also try colored eye liner on your lower lid as an alternative for eye shadow.

Remember to choose either your eyes or your lips to stand out when applying dramatic makeup. You don't want to overwhelm your look.

When paired with the beauty within, you are ready to look your best and turn heads this fall season!
