Immunizations for a Healthier Financial Life
by the Staff of Total Money $chool
It's flu season. If you haven't caught the bug yet, then you're among the lucky few! Unfortunately, "sickness" doesn't only attack your physical life; it attacks your financial life, too. Here are a few financial "diseases" to be or guard for as well as ways to prevent the infection.
Hyper-Fee-ism: This refers to the large number and/or amount you are paying in fees on credit cards, loans and bills. Late fees, over-the-limit fees, and other charges can add up quickly and eat into your financial well-being.
Prevention: Pay your bills on time and don't go over your limits.
Low Credit-i-sis: You have a low credit score and blindly accept as fact that you don't and won't qualify for many of the lower-rate loans and credit cards available.
Prevention: Don't carry too much debt, and (again) pay your bills on time. More importantly, talk to your financial planner about a strategy to improve your credit score.
Keep-Up-With-the-Joneses Disease: This one encompasses a variety of behaviors including buying new cars every couple of years, going on regular shopping sprees (for things you don't really need), and not controlling your "discretionary" spending (coffee, soda, eating out, etc). These bad habits can quickly erode your financial strength, leaving you vulnerable to infection from debt. (Note: As of this writing, no cure has been discovered to quickly eliminate debt. However, Total Money School is the leading research facility at this time. Stay updated by visiting their site at www.totalmoneyschool.com)
Prevention: Set Goals! Keep your eyes on the future; you will be less tempted to seek immediate gratification.
Ostrich Syndrome: You become so frustrated by debt and feel like there's no alternative other than "sticking your head in the sand" (not addressing it) and pretending it doesn't exist.
Prevention: Educate yourself! There are hundreds of books, magazines, articles and websites you can visit to learn more about your money and your life. Total Money School was created to teach you the financial principles you should have learned in school.
The first step (if you're ready to immunize yourself or start treating the current infection), is to get educated. Talk to a financial professional, sign up for a class, or just head on over to the library and pick up some books. Become your own "financial doctor."
The staff of Total Money $chool can be reached at 753-9683.

The SCV Facilities Foundation Annual Report
For the past several years, the Santa Clarita Valley Facilities
Foundation has provided a report to the community outlining its activities and accomplishments during the previous year. The 2007 Annual Report will be available March 1, 2008 and appear in the April edition of InsideSCV Magazine. You may also request a copy by calling 753-5759 or visit www.scvfacilitiesfoundation.org to view the report online.

The Facilities Foundation is a nonprofit public benefit corporation founded in 1998. Together in partnership with the City of Santa Clarita and the William S. Hart Union High School District, the Foundation accomplished one of the largest public works projects in city history with the building of Golden Valley Road and Golden Valley High School.

With the recent purchase of two school site parcels in Canyon Country, the Facilities Foundation continues to assist the Hart District in strategic planning for locating future school sites, identifying opportunities and funding other education-related projects.

Perhaps most important in these times of tight government budgets, the Foundation is fully self-funded, requiring no taxpayer subsidy. All expenses are paid out of its own funds generated from its development activities.

Surplus funds are held for a public purpose to be invested in local schools and other public facilities for the education of students. Current policy provides for these funds to be used for the "brick-and-mortar" mission of the Foundation.
To learn more about the Foundation and the dedicated volunteers who serve on the oard of directors, visit www.scvfacilitiesfoundation.org.
