SCV Business Group Awards Scholarships

For the last three years, The SCV Business Group has set aside scholarship funds for local high school students planning business related studies. The students are invited to a special breakfast in their honor, and are awarded cash scholarships to acknowledge their hard work, and assist them with the growing cost of education. This year's recipients are as follows: Representing Academy of the Canyons, Matthew Jackson. Matthew will be majoring in Business Economics at UC Santa Barbara. From Bowman High School, Rudy Ortiz will be awarded. Rudy plans to major in Business at College of the Canyons. The recipient from Canyon High School, Britney Weldon, plans to attend UC Irvine, where she will study Business/Accounting. Hart High School's scholarship recipient is Benjamin Coussens, who will study business, and Saugus High School's Brandon Simmons will be majoring in Accounting at Cal State Northridge. Jason Galvin of Valencia High School will major in Marketing at College of the Canyons.

Total Trash Out Recycling Contest Raises Over $26,500 for Santa Clarita Valley Schools

Twenty-one schools and more than 15,000 students participated in Waste Management/Blue Barrel Disposal's Total Trash Out program, raising over $26,500 for Santa Clarita Valley schools. Total Trash Out is a four-week aluminum can drive contest between local elementary schools, that raises money for schools while teaching students about the importance of recycling.

This year, students recycled 16,570 pounds of aluminum (equal to over 530,000 aluminum cans). Two schools are recognized as grand-prize winners in the Total Trash Out contest: the school that collects the most pounds of aluminum overall and the school that collects the most pounds of aluminum per student. The winning schools are Northlake Hills Elementary, which recycled 2,744 pounds of aluminum, earning $4,390.40 and Plum Canyon Elementary school, which won for the most pounds per student, recycling 2.12 pounds per student for a total of 1,457 pounds, earning $2,331.20.

Local Dentist Attends Academy of Laser Dentistry's Annual Conference

Local dentist Dr. Dell Goodrick was among the more than 350 leading national and international clinicians as well as academicians attending the Academy of Laser Dentistry's Annual Scientific Session in New Orleans. The weekend conference and exhibition offered discussions on new research, technological developments and the expanding role of lasers in dental care.

Conference attendees participated in programs including certification, advanced laser clinics, and more. The Academy of Laser Dentistry is an International professional membership association of dental practitioners and supporting organizations dedicated to improving the health and well-being of patients through the proper use of laser technology. Dr. Goodrick and his hygienist, Christopher Cook, have both achieved standard certification.
