One Mother's Carousel Ranch Story
"My name is Carri Wagner and my 6-year-old son Chase has been riding at Carousel Ranch for the last two and a half years. Since Day One, Chase has ridden Mookie. Chase was diagnosed with autism at 26 months. I had no idea that four little words - your son has autism - would change our world. I remember feeling scared, heart-broken, faithless and hopeless. He had severe meltdowns, was very anti-social and couldn't speak. We started intense therapy and I saw some improvements but Chase still was not talking at 3.5 years old. Fast forward to getting a call from Denise at Carousel Ranch that our time on the wait list was over - we were 'up!' It truly was one of the happiest days of my life. Within a month of riding, I started to see extraordinary improvements in Chase's behavior and speech. I owe Chase's progress to Carousel Ranch and Mookie. The benefit Chase receives from riding helps him in other therapies. Chase is balanced, regulated and so happy after riding. Chase has grown to love Mookie and has such a special bond with him. Mookie is not only a therapy horse but has become such a special part of Chase's childhood. We talk about Mookie at home and each week have a countdown until Chase gets to see his furry friend. I am eternally grateful to those that support Carousel Ranch for helping Chase have a chance at being the best he can be!"

The Carousel Ranch Story
Carousel Ranch is a community treasure that is changing lives. For anyone not familiar, this nonprofit organization has provided developmental therapeutic and recreational programs for children with special needs through equestrian therapy for more than two decades. To feel the impact, imagine a teenage girl confined to a wheelchair being lifted onto the back of a horse and knowing what it feels like to walk for the first time in her life. Or watching a young boy with limited use of his right arm and leg balance atop his favorite mare. For every child served by the program there are powerful stories to tell. Meet Julianna, a young girl with cerebral palsy and low tone in her muscles, making it difficult to sit, stand or hold her head up.
After five years of equestrian therapy, this determined 10-year-old has bonded with Annabelle, one of the Ranch's gentle creatures. In the words of her mother, "She has done so well in her motor developments thanks to Carousel Ranch. She has so much more trunk control and is now able to prompt herself to a sitting position and sit and play, watch TV, etc." We hope readers share our passion for the work of Carousel Ranch and join us in offering support to the 21st Annual Heart of the West on Saturday, August 26.
