A Rose by Any Other Name...Would be Called "Friend"
Host a "Girlfriends" Soiree
June, 2009 - Issue #56
June is National Rose Month. For some, that means extra hours in the garden, cultivating richly-toned blooms. But for those of us without green thumbs, it may inspire a different sort of cultivation: friendships.

Gather your dearest female friends and beloved relatives for a day of old-time decadence. Laughter and good-natured gossip will be the main course of the day. Delicate yet delicious foods will please the palate; each bite-size serving should be small enough to nibble between sentences.

Set the tone early - and ensure that your friends' have ample opportunity to work your soiree into their busy schedule - with formal invitations. Myra Harbour, owner of Celebrate
(259-8611), suggests incorporating lace-inspired textures or even rose petals into your mailed invitations.

The Menu
• Chicken and Watercress Tea Sandwiches
• Cucumber Tea Sandwiches
• Raspberry and Almond Scones Served with Devonshire Cream
• Melon and Berry Fruit Salad
• Petite Coconut Cake Bites
• Fresh-brewed Iced Tea and Mimosas

The Details
Time and Place
Your blooming backyard should serve as an ideal gathering place. If your space boasts shade trees or a covered outdoor living area, any time of the day should do. However, if you lack overhead protection from the sun, settle on a beautiful spot and host your party in the late afternoon or early evening.

Set Up
The goal is to encourage conversation, so choose a table design that makes playing catch up a pleasure. A long and narrow rectangle should suit the situation perfectly. Just be sure to keep your centerpieces nice and low so that they don't serve as accidental barriers to conversation. A-1 Rentals
(775-8111) offers everything you'll need for a fab party, including table, chair and linen rentals.

Favors
Gift your gal pals with a sentimental treat. Yellow roses are believed to be a symbol of true friendship. Your parting gift could be as literal as a rose cutting from the same plant (Oh, the symbolism!). For those not garden inspired, a faux version of the flower should serve just as well. Create framed photos, memory books or even floral-topped pens that can also act as table-top decor.
