Bras for a Cause Returns to Santa Clarita
September, 2005 - Issue #11
Art. Martinis. Fundraising for breast cancer. Can you think of a better way to spend a Sunday afternoon?

Last year, Soroptimist's Bras for a Cause event raised more than eyebrows; over $20,000 was raised for breast cancer treatment and support. Since the event, $10,000 has been given to Santa Clarita's local breast imaging center to improve its detection technology, and another $5,000 has been used to provide mammograms to women who otherwise could not afford the life-saving procedure. Funds are also used to provide financial support to women with breast cancer, including financial help with childcare, rent, groceries and more.

This year, Event Chair Therese Edwards expects Bras for a Cause to raise even more for local women. "We're hoping for more decorated and donated bras, more attendees, more exposure! Guests had such a great time last year, and I know that they'll come back with friends in tow this year!"

In addition to over 100 artfully decorated pieces of lingerie (which are silently bid on by guests during the event), this year's Bras for a Cause will also feature a small breast-cancer-oriented boutique. "Our goal is not only to raise money, but awareness of the disease and the benefits of early detection. Our vendors will have fashionable jewelry, scarves, gifts and more, but also books and products that help women keep themselves healthy," says Event Co-Chair Lisa Schuman.

"We're really hoping that the entire community will take the opportunity to show support for the women and men they know that have fought breast cancer," says Lori Dalton, Bras for a Cause co-chair. Decorated bras can be donated in honor of, memory of, or in gratitude of someone special.

There are a few ways to get involved in this unique event. First, consider donating a decorated bra. The donation price is set at a $100 minimum for "artists" that create their own undergarment work of art. If you want to get involved but aren't feeling crafty, the Bras for a Cause committee will arrange for your bra to be decorated for you for a minimum donation of $150. Raffle prizes, specialty boutique vendors, artists and more are also being sought.

Whether you are a bra sponsor or just want to check out other folks' pieces, make your way to the Activities Center on Sunday, October 9, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Tickets are $45 and include appetizers, drinks and admission to the show.

Tickets, which must be purchased in advance, as well as Bras for a Cause donation forms, can be had at Queen Anne Stitches (26111 Bouquet Canyon Road in the IHOP shopping center, Saugus; 286-1248), Shanelle's Hair Salon (23550 Lyons Avenue #115 next to Margo's, Newhall; 259-2696), Valencia Acura (23955 Creekside, Valencia; 255-3000), or call Inside SCV Magazine at 257-7494.
