Breezy Al Fresco Dining
June, 2009 - Issue #56
Dining in the elements can be a sensuous experience. With a little forward thinking, your meal under the sun or stars will be as relaxing as a warm summer's breeze.

Bug Off
Nothing ruins a moment like shooing a fly off one's plate or swatting at mosquitoes. During the al fresco seasons, utilize fly or bee traps to cut down on bothersome bugs. Of course, remove them from sight before guests arrive. Disguise pest-repelling citronella candles as decor by placing them in bowls or atop broad candlestick holders.

Embrace the Season
Pair the sights and smells of summer with fresh seasonal treats like luscious peaches. Take a trip to the farmers' market and incorporate the prettiest finds in a fruit bowl that can double as a centerpiece. Add just-sliced pieces of cucumber or sprigs of mint to glistening carafes of ice water and top glasses of juice with a quick pour of sparkling water for a refreshing lift. Many guests will appreciate your efforts to serve organic produce, so spend the extra few pennies and go pesticide free.

Pack Light
Al fresco dining need not be complicated. Fill a large bin with your must-needed items (think: tablecloth, serveware, napkins, etc.) and make just one trip from the house. Provide guests with easy access to a breeze-proof caddy filled with utensils and condiments so that they can help themselves.

Back it Up
No matter how well you plan, you'll never be able to control the weather. It might be a strong Santa Ana wind that does you in, or a fire, or a thunder shower. Whatever the potential cause, have your interior dining room ready just in case.
