Escape to Paradise with Soroptimist
July, 2006 - Issue #21
On Saturday August 13, "Escape to Paradise" by joining the Soroptimists of Santa Clarita in their 31st Annual Charity Auction. Hawaiian music and dance will set the festive evening's mood, while guests enjoy both live and silent auctions, dinner and entertainment.

Beginning at 3 p.m. at the Hyatt Valencia, guests will start the day by experiencing cool summer breezes while shopping for their favorite silent auction items. Choosing from over 150 items, including a variety of baskets and individual items, there is honestly something for everyone. The evening will continue with a Hawaiian feast in the company of friends while guests are entertained and amazed with an unforgettable display of Hawaiian dance.

Event Chair Gail Rocco-Mack promises that this will be a night to remember. "We have never done a luau theme before. I want this to be 'the fun event of the year,' giving people a chance to get out and do something good, but making it so much fun that they can't wait to come back again next year!"

And doing something good is truly what Soroptimist's members (over 50 of them) are all about. The Soroptimist of Santa Clarita Valley is an international nonprofit service organization for executive and professional women. All of the funds raised at "Escape to Paradise - A Hawaiian Luau" will be distributed to benefit the group's Outreach Program, offering assistance and crisis intervention to local nonprofit organizations and the women they serve. This year, the group is proud to support many local programs benefiting women and girls, including Single Mother's Outreach, Senior Center, Samuel Dixon Family Health Center, College of the Canyons, Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital, Domestic Violence Center of the SCV and Carousel Ranch.

Rocco-Mack explained that for her, this is what it is all about. "We have liaisons out in the community bringing those in need to our attention. It might be a single mom who we help to further her education, or needing help with paying the rent. It is very challenging, but exciting at the same time. We were able to donate funds for the local Girl Scouts, to purchase mannequins for the girls to learn and practice CPR. Recently we found out that one local girl actually had to use what she had learned, performing CPR after learning on the mannequins that we donated! That is powerful."

The success of this event will make it possible for the Soroptimists to continue their mission. Though they raised over $78,000 last year, Rocco-Mack is reluctant to set a financial goal. She explained that though "it is about raising money, I am trying to create an event that is just so much fun that people can't wait to come back next year... and hopefully, the money comes in with it!"

Concluding with a live auction, guests will enjoy bidding on some of the new and original items. One such item is a unique two-night stay aboard the Queen Mary, where guests will enjoy a deluxe room along with the history and excitement of touring the legendary ship, a "Haunted Tour," dinner for two and special Queen Mary memorabilia. From a six-night stay for six guests at the Andulusia Country Club in the Palm Springs area to a Jay Leno VIP package including front row seating, backstage passes (including the opportunity to meet Jay Leno) and dinner for two at the Smokehouse - the live auction is sure to be a success.

The Soroptimists invite the community to join in the fun - taking part in this unique and special event. Rocco-Mack explains that "this event is open to everyone. It is a great opportunity to come and see what we are all about." She went on to explain that being a Soroptimist for the past 11 years "has so meaningful. I love people - we are all so unique, and all have something to offer. I have built a lot of friendships, not only within the group, but with our community as well."
