The Santa Clarita Ballet Company presents "The Nutcracker."
There is plenty of holiday entertainment this season at some of Santa Clarita's local venues. Beginning with the ever-popular Nutcracker Ballet to some funny and heartwarming plays, the spirit of the season will come alive for everyone in the family.

Santa Clarita Ballet's "Nutcracker"

In their 12th annual performance, the Santa Clarita Ballet's "Nutcracker" has become a holiday tradition for many Santa Clarita families. Held in the last several years at the state-of-the-art College of the Canyons Performing Arts Center, the Santa Clarita Ballet transports audience members into E.T.A. Hoffman's timeless story of The Nutcracker. Under the direction of renowned choreographer Carole Guidry, the highly trained dancers from the Ballet Company and Academy along with several professional guest artists, create the beloved Nutcracker characters.

The classic story begins on Christmas Even at the home of Dr. and Mrs. Stahlbaum. The mysterious Herr Drosselmeyer presents a toy Nutcracker to his niece Marie, who is devastated when her brother Fritz breaks the toy. That evening Marie has an enchanting dream consisting of little mice, a Rat King, toy soldiers, a handsome prince, Sugar Plum fairies and a Snow Queen. With artistry and whimsy, the dancers portray these characters which merit standing ovations year after year.

Performances are scheduled for Friday, December 15 at 8 p.m., Saturday, December 16 at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. and Sunday, December 17 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Advance ticket purchase is highly recommended as shows sell out quickly. Ticket prices are $28, $26 and $24 and are sold through the Santa Clarita Ballet Company at 251-0366.

The REP's "Santaland Diaries"

The Repertory East Playhouse in downtown Newhall presents "Santaland Diaries" - a salute to the Christmas slacker. Opening on November 17, the play highlights an out-of-work slacker who takes on a job at Macy's during the holiday season. The job is not only humiliating for our slacker, but after witnessing the shopping frenzy of thousands of Macy customers, he becomes battle weary and bitter. Soon another Santa is brought into the workshop, but this one is quite different. This new Santa actually cares about and loves the children who come to see him. Our slacker received a starting moment of goodwill just before his employment runs out.

Accompanying "Santaland Diaries" are two hilarious monologues that will have audience members bending over with laughter. "Season's Greetings" and "Front Row Center With Thadeuss Bristol" are two funny, touching and peculiar monologues about the holiday season.

Performances run Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. through December 23. Tickets are $14 for students and seniors and $16 for adults. Group rates are available. Call 288-0000 or visit www.repeastplayhouse.org for more information or reservations.
