Grease is the Word for 2007 Boys & Girls Club Auction
June, 2007 - Issue #32
Hillary Clinton said "it takes a village" to raise a child. She had a point. It's not 1955 anymore. Kids' after-school activities don't usually include a stay-at-home mom in an apron and pearls pulling fresh cookies out of the oven. If a child is lucky enough to have two involved parents, chances are they're at work for 10 hours a day. Quality time sometimes means a five-minute chat while negotiating the drive-through at McDonald's.

Kids need adult involvement and the Boys & Girls Club provides it. Serving more than 3,500 young people in our valley, the club offers meaningful and caring programs including sports, education and career planning, life skills, character development and arts exploration. Today's kids not only have fewer resources than we did; the competition is tougher. They don't just compete for college slots and jobs with other Americans - the global economy means they'll be up against young people from other countries as well.

Supporting the Boys & Girls Club makes sense for all of us. Remember, even if you don't have kids, today's youngsters will run this country when you're retired. How well we prepare them for that responsibility might make the difference between a relaxing retirement of golf and frilly drinks with paper umbrellas, or dodging giant skiploaders scooping up old people for the Soylent Green factories. Ok. That might be kind of extreme, but you get the point.

Supporting the Boys & Girls Club is easy. On Saturday, June 9 the Foundation will hold its annual auction under the theme "Grease is the Word." This event accounts for fully one-third of the club's annual budget. Last year they netted $475,000; this year ought to be even better.

This is no rubber chicken and pick-up band event. Gourmet cuisine by Someone's in the Kitchen catering will wow even the most jaded palate. Having catered Academy Awards events, these folks know food. If they can satisfy Hollywood's prissy prima donnas, they'll wow the SCV's movers and shakers. If you spring for a VIP ticket, you'll even get full sit-down table service.

Entertainment will include dancers and Grease character look-a-likes. Dance if you want, dress up if you want - anything for fun. But remember, the real action is the auction.

Bob Kellar and Kathy Keysor-Smith, event co-chairs, have worked hard to ensure that the Boys & Girls Club auction is better than a live Neiman Marcus catalog. Via both a live auction and an innovative bid-board system that combines the best features of a silent auction and live bidding, the club delivers a truckload of unique items. With a focus on jewelry, sporting memorabilia, adventure travel and works of art, there's sure to be something for everyone. Many generous donors have provided items that simply can't be found anywhere else at any price. This is your chance to make a once-in-a-lifetime purchase while doing good for the community. It's like eating a double hot-fudge sundae, losing weight and stopping global warming, all at the same time.

So don't wait. Tickets range from $3000 for a VIP table of 10 to $85 for individual reserved seats with dinner, to $25 per couple for the auction only. Call the foundation at 661-254-3063 and make your reservations. Then warm up the checkbook, stretch your taste buds, and get your biggest car ready. You'll need it to bring home the goods.
