Great Finds - The SCV has your Cure for Valentine's Day Boredom
February, 2007 - Issue #28
Love. We all want it. More addictive than illegal narcotics and tougher to find, love is the most intense emotion. From the roller coaster ride of a budding romance to the favorite-jeans feel of a long-established relationship, love has led to wars, dethroned kings and inspired poems. Without love our world would be as gray as cloudy winter's day.

Love confounds us. We celebrate Saint Valentine's Day, but scholars aren't sure which Saint Valentine prompted the holiday. The origins are shrouded in mystery like love itself; we can't describe how to create love any more than we can explain how to dream. For something everyone has experienced love is awfully puzzling.

People speak of falling in love as if all it takes is a misplaced step to trip over your soul mate. That old guy in the eHarmony ads wants us to believe we can find love by clicking a few boxes on an e-form (and sending him some money). The movies tell us that love develops in 90 minutes as we dodge evil spies. Mom says we can find love with the girl next door.

Perhaps. But nothing's happening without some effort. The heart is a muscle, literally and figuratively. If you want love, you have to work at it. Sure, it's fun work, but work nonetheless.

The Inside SCV staff knows this. After extensive trial and error, multiple romances, a few stalkings and a restraining order, we've earned our doctorates in love. As Bryan Ferry sang, "Love is the drug." We've got the prescription.

So let's find a way to make this Valentine's Day special. With our help, you're sure to succeed. If you can't pull off this date, you need to turn in your dating license. And remember, it's Valentine's Day, not Valentime's Day. Girls don't get intimate with boys who aren't literate.
