Keeping Up with Ken
October, 2019 - Issue #181

"Highlights of this year's event will be updates on two of the landmark projects in our Santa Clarita 2020 STRATEGIC PLAN - the new Canyon Country Community Center and the
Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station."
Q. Santa Clarita residents are already buzzing about this year's State of the City Luncheon. Tell us what people can expect and about the theme -
Lights, Camera, Santa Clarita!

Each year the State of the City Luncheon is where you can find out what is going on in the city, learn about accomplishments, future plans and come together as a community to celebrate our city. This year's event will highlight Santa Clarita's rich film history and the current economic boost that comes from local filming. For those who have not attended a past luncheon, you can expect to hear from the mayor and the city council as they share videos recapping the last year, enjoy lunch and receive a commemorative gift. There are always a few fun, unexpected surprises, too. Highlights of this year's event will be updates on two of the landmark projects in our Santa Clarita 2020 Strategic Plan - the new Canyon Country Community Center and the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station. The State of the City luncheon is Thursday, October 24 at 11:30am. Buy your tickets now at santa-clarita.com.

Q. Every October, the numbers 10 and 17 come with an important safety message. Can you tell us more about that?
Each year on October 17, at 10:17am, millions of people across the state take part in the Annual Great California Shakeout. This event reminds people that earthquakes can happen anywhere you work, live or travel, which is why everyone, everywhere should know how to protect themselves should an earthquake occur. At city hall and other city facilities, when the drill begins, an announcement informs employees that an earthquake is happening and they climb under their desks, cover their heads and hold on. You can take part, too - go to shakeout.org/register to register your family or organization. You will receive information on how to prepare for earthquakes and what actions to take during and after the shaking, as well as other ShakeOut news and updates.

Q. I always enjoy looking through the pages of the city's Seasons Magazine and seeing all the unique, fun opportunities to get active. Share some of your favorites and... what is pickleball?
Pickleball is one of the fastest-growing sports in the country! People love the combination of badminton, tennis and ping pong. We offer three locations to play - the Santa Clarita Sports Complex Gymnasium, Bouquet Canyon Park and the Newhall Community Center. The rules are easy to learn, so it is a great sport for beginners, but it can quickly turn into a fast-paced competitive game! I would also recommend trying your hand at disc golf on one of the two courses at Central Park. Check out the fall edition of Seasons for more on this popular sport. Within the pages of Seasons, you can also find classes teaching a variety of dance styles, yoga, racquetball, high-intensity interval training, Tai Chi, Pilates and so much more. For more information and to register go to santa-clarita.com/seasons.
