Santa Clarita's most ginormous fundraiser has again come and gone, leaving the Boys & Girls Club's storage room approximately (and we're just making an educated estimate here) 829,347 auction items lighter. The net total is estimated at $475,000.
The heavy-walleted among us walked off (and by "walked" we mean carried on the shoulders of oh-so-grateful volunteers to their awaiting stretch limos) with must-have items like private movie screenings, after-hours rollercoaster parties, trips to places we can't spell and puppies evidently worth more than our first cars.
Those of us who had to mix with the other peasants at the silent auction tables were treated to a trashy sight: good ol' Chris Fall and wife Jayne loving up his new bins. Fall, a longtime SCV "waste management expert" (aka "trash man") and, coincidentally, a really good hugger, has started his own business enterprise: Advantage Disposal & Recycling. We wish him the best of luck.
Randy Wrage, also known as the man who has made the B& G Club's 2005 Festival of Trees possible (those huge warehouses don't build and donate themselves, you know), along with over 1,000 other attendees, enjoyed the balmy evening at the Mann Biomedical Park. On the by and by, Festival will be held on November 17 through 19 this year (yes, it's a shameless plug for another Inside SCV Magazine sponsored event, but it's for a good cause, so lay off already!).
On a more tender front, we also caught a glimpse of future heart-breaker Caitlin Belue, granddaughter of B&G guru Judy Belue. Little Caitlin wasn't eager to look into the camera, but don't blame us. Canyon High Principal Bob Messina, seated to the left of the curly-headed munchkin, seemed to enjoy mimicking his poorly-behaved charges by sticking his tongue out at the child and making goo-goo faces as we attempted to score a prize-winning shot.
Ready for a big-time confession of the "too-much-information" variety? After the Michael Hoefflin Foundation's golf tournament, we are mad crushing (don't mock us; we learned the term from Ryan Seacrest, so it must be cool) on Tony Potts of "Access Hollywood," who, like the darling that he is, emceed the event benefiting kids with cancer. Tony, while our oh-so-public declaration of love may be considered too base and superficial for a man of your fine character, know that we "heart you" forever.
In other news, Jill Mellady, last seen here in this photo from the event getting a tad too cozy to our man Tony for our liking, has gone missing under suspicious circumstances. Personally, we think she's vacationing with husband Jim, but the cops aren't buyin' it.
MHF board member and Santa Clarita Studios exec Michael DeLorenzo, also seen here, has no comment on the missing Mellady or her penchant for snuggling up to our guy under the ruse of a photo op. However, rumor has it that a made-for-TV movie may be shot at his studios recounting this tale of love gone wrong sometime this winter.
The Retired Police and Fire Assistance Foundation's Tommy Bahama Bash, held at All Corked Up, brought out wine lovers like screenwriter Debbie Leoni, new boutique owner Annie Schwartz of Fresh (a new clothing boutique found in the Yellow Victorian building in Newhall) and her husband Robert of Tower Funding. Hosts Arif Halaby, president of Total Financial Solutions, Doug Gould, president of RPFAF, and Don McNiel, the event's emcee, were pleased to see over 100 locals eager to support the men and women who have served our community so selflessly.
And if you're reading this line for some type of catty follow up jab, you're out of luck. Mocking events and volunteers like these would be in such poor taste. We thought you knew us better. We're ashamed of you, and so is your mother.
And now back to the mocking. Yes, that's Carl Goldman, pictured here at The Painted Turtle function, in all his multiple-personality disorder glory. Seems the KHTS radio station owner isn't content with his singular identity. Maybe it's this summer's focus on super-hero movies that's done him in. Word from the wise, Goldman. Take it from those with a little experience: If you are going to don Clark Kent glasses, you better have some pretty flashy tights under those khakis.
The Painted Turtle will be hosting "Under the Turtle Moon" on Saturday, September 16 at Agua Dulce Vineyards. The Painted Turtle is part of the family of Hole in the Wall Camps founded by actor Paul Newman and is the only multi-disease medical camp of its kind on the west coast.
