Is he bluffing? Mark Emert cracks a big smile at the first-annual Texas Hold'em tournament in Santa Clarita
Do you know when to hold 'em? Do you know when to walk away and know when to run?

You do if you haven't been living under a rock this last year. Poker, particularly the popularly televised Texas Hold'em version, has stripped away its "cigars and dark rooms" persona and taken a spot on the main stage of adult recreation.

Capitalizing on the mindset switch is RJ Kelly, creator of Santa Clarita's first annual Texas Hold'em Mania Tournament that was held at the SCV Activities Center on March 18. "I enjoy the game, and it's become so popular on television that I thought it could make an excellent fundraiser for Santa Clarita. We're always looking for something different, and this tournament will help great charities raise a large amount of money by combining manpower," says Kelly. The "no limit" event will benefit Carousel Ranch, the SCV Senior Center, SCV's School and Business Alliance, Singe Mothers Outreach and Children's Network International.

Here's how it went down. When players registered, they selected the charity they wished to represent. Twenty-five percent of the registration fee went directly to the charity selected, and the remainder was deposited into the pot. The top five players earned their selected charity even more money, but even the losers made out well. The Roast House, Telly's, Margaritas, Salt Creek Grille, and Dario's Mexican Food catered the event, and the Chamber of Commerce served at the bar (a good thing if you like your drinks strong).

Because of the event's popularity, the next SCV Texas Hold'em is already in the works. Pegged for the fall season, players are already working on their glassy-eyed stare and card-countin' skills.
