Soroptimists Go-Go Back to the Sixties for Auction
March, 2007 - Issue #29
Break out the bell-bottoms, dust off the love beads and put some flowers in your hair. We're not going to San Francisco, but we are headed for the Soroptimists' "Flashback to the Sixties" fundraising auction.

The 32nd installment of the annual event promises to be groovy, says Cynthia Eichler, who serves as auction chair for the Santa Clarita Valley Chapter of Soroptimists International. "We try to keep it fun and light-hearted so our donors can come and have a good time while helping us raise money," she says.

The festivities are scheduled for March 25 at Hyatt Valencia. The party starts at 3 p.m. with a two-hour silent auction. Peaceniks and flower children in attendance can bid on themed gift baskets prepared by Soroptimists members. Dinner, entertainment and a live auction with big-ticket items will follow at 5:30 p.m.

Though the auction will be fun, it's about more than reconnecting with your inner hippie. The Soroptimists' largest fundraiser of the year allows the group to continue supporting local nonprofit organizations that assist women, children and seniors. "We have a real purpose in what we want to do in helping our fellow man here in Santa Clarita," explains Eichler, a 20-year resident of the valley.

"The more we RAISE, the more we can HELP throughout the community,"

Soroptimist auction chair
The Soroptimists provide funds to the Sheila R. Veloz Breast Imaging Center, the Santa Clarita Valley Child and Family Center, the Samuel Dixon Family Health Center, the SCV Senior Center, Single Mothers Outreach, SCV Domestic Violence Center and College of the Canyons Foundation, where the money provides tangible assistance to those in need. Thanks to Soroptimists, women who can't afford mammograms receive them for free at the Veloz Center, and financial help for needy moms is available from Single Mothers Outreach.

"We have a lot of supporters who have been very gracious to us that have contributed regularly through the years," Eichler says. "The more we raise, the more we can help throughout the community."

Soroptimists have a history of helping Santa Clarita since the local chapter was founded more than 30 years ago. Made up of professional women from a variety of fields and all walks of life, the 50-plus members enjoy the opportunity to serve, the camaraderie and networking opportunities. New members are accepted regularly. Eichler just joined about 18 months ago. "I had heard about this great group of ladies," the Valencia resident says. "At the time I was working freelance in the fashion industry and was looking for a way to connect with other professional women." It's been a great experience, she says, and she's looking forward to a successful auction.

Tickets to "Flashback to the Sixties" are $85 per person, and still available. But unlike Woodstock, only a limited number will be sold. Get yours today and turn flower power into buying power so the Soroptimists can continue their support of our community.
