Santa Clarita, California
The Oaks Grille, TPC Valencia's hidden public gem residing within the country clubhouse's well-appointed walls, is a study in contradictions. It is both rustic and regal. A part of a community steeped in tradition while on the forefront of a culinary farm-to-table movement, The Oaks Grille offers comfort food with refined presentation. On one point, however, there is no division. The ambience is impeccable; the food, incredible.
Bake You Happy first landed on my radar during an epic toddler meltdown in Barnes & Noble. As I scurried the offending child outside, my parenting-book-approved skills devolved into, "See that super-pretty store on the other side of the parking lot? They sell cupcakes! Mommy will buy you one if you're quiet for 10 minutes."
"I can't wait to see you! Let's do dinner," said my West LA-based friend last year. Tentatively I replied. "Do you want to come out here to the SCV, or should I come to you?" There are few things more uncomfortable than having a friend explain that your hometown is not the Mecca of culinary cuisine. Now, with Sake Bistro & Sushi open in Valencia, I finally had a reason to avoid LA traffic - and prices. Promising that she'd dine on incredible dishes that put even LA's best to shame, I convinced her to make the drive up.
The click-clack of Manolo Blahniks announces the arrival of another "girl posse," one of Sabor Cocina Mexicana's most loyal demographics. The well-dressed women settle into a comfortable, yet finely-appointed booth and sip on Skinny Girl margaritas while enjoying a decadent appetizer of gossip and laughter.
We asked four local chef's to share a few of their motivation, thier favorites and the secrets to thier success...
In defiance of the looming recession and perhaps even conventional wisdom, The Kona Crisp opened its doors on July 5 of last year. Since then, the restaurant has found many fans in Santa Clarita by offering top-quality Hawaiian BBQ at affordable prices. A couple of friends and I stopped by on a Saturday afternoon to try The Kona Crisp for ourselves.

This summer has been dragging like a stubborn mule on a broken sled. With half the population terrified to open the mail for fear of another mortgage rate adjustment and the rest exhausted from clawing behind the sofa cushions for gas money, that one-week stay-cation just isn't cutting it. If we don't come up with something fun for the whole family that's local, inexpensive and entertaining, we're likely to start scanning Craigslist for the local Dr. Kevorkian Day Spa.
Late summer is the season for absorbing some culture. School's out and the offspring have parked their brains in neutral for a couple months. It's time to jumpstart those idle neurons for the coming school year. Take the kids to a museum or two and expose them to the wide array of humankind's artistic achievement, if you can drag them away from the Xbox for long enough. It's time they learned that the human soul searched for meaning long before virtual avatars inhabited 22-level electronic dungeons or virtual cities where stealing a car and assaulting innocent victims earns a more powerful engine and a resounding cheer from a gallery of thieves.
You can hear the commotion of revving engines miles away, you are consumed with intrigue from the parade of beautifully restored classics piling up from the various off-ramps of the 14 and the 5 and you can smell the charcoal of the barbeque grilling away delicious Joni Maroni sausages from your backyard patios.
ENTERTAINMENT
Finally, a reason for you to dust off those leather pants. On Saturday, June 1, the Boys and Girls Club of Santa Clarita Valley will host their annual auction. This year's theme, "Rock On!" will have guests tripping down rock 'n roll memory lane while raising much-needed funds for the club, which serves over 2,400 kids between the ages of 7 and 17 each year.
Some of you may remember the good old days in Newhall when the area was the bustling center of town for the entire Santa Clarita Valley. Back in the day there was Newhall Hardware, the drugstore on the corner with a soda fountain, the Mahogany & Chiffon clothing boutique... But then so much growth happened in the Valley that this part of town was forgotten.

This is getting out of hand. If passwords are today's keys, I'm lugging around a ring that would make a high school janitor jealous. I reached the tipping point at work. We operate multiple systems, each of which requires a different password.
Santa Clarita boasts amazing golf courses, training centers and league competitions. We've compiled a few of the greats and paired them with amazing tips from the pros. Play through!
GET OUT OF TOWN
"El pais grande del sur." That's how 18th-century Spanish settlers described the remote, unexplored region south of Monterey. Its treacherous coastline and rugged mountains made the area forbidding and inhospitable.
Having grown up just a couple of miles away, I thought I knew the Sepulveda Basin. I had ridden its bike trails, played its golf courses and ran around its parks. But I had never kayaked its river.
Just how true is your love? Valentine's Day is not the most accurate gauge for measuring the strength of your relationship. Let's face it: We're all on our best behavior when Cupid's watching.
Idyllwild is the antithesis of the typical Southern California mountain get-away destination. No golf. No skiing. Nothing remotely resorty. And frankly, that's a good thing. It's an unscripted, come-as-you-are, kind of place free of hurry or worry. You don't need to do anything in Idyllwild (unless you want to). You can just be.
Devil's Punchbowl Natural Area is one of those places that leaves you wanting to come back for more. Each trip is filled with, "Where in the heck am I?" moments. It is so unlike its surroundings - or anywhere else in Southern California - that you can't help but want to keep exploring.
"Who wants this gold?" asked a park ranger holding up a small glass tube packed with shiny flakes. Without waiting for an answer, she waved her hand over a trough lined with sand and gravel. The flakes fluttered into the cold water and disappeared to the bottom.

FEATURES
As I sit and reflect of our 100th issue, I can't help but think about how it all began and what brought us to this milestone. It's said, "It takes a village to raise a child" and I believe that with my whole heart.
