Legacy's New Elementary Science Teacher
Ryan Anthony Raises the Bar
on Lower-grade Education

Ryan Anthony has taught nearly every grade and Science class, ranging from Forensics/Criminal Science to AP Physics - but it's his new role as Elementary Science Teacher at Legacy, instructing grades second through sixth, that has really lit the fire under his proverbial Bunsen burner.

"It's so fun to teach this level - it's a totally new adventure for me!" exclaims the Newhall resident. "Their curiosity and sparkling eyes, seeing the lightbulbs go off when they comprehend something new about God's creation - it makes me excited to go to work every day. There's a joy in the classroom that I haven't felt in a really long time when teaching upper grades. Younger children have a natural excitement for all things Science; it's so fun to foster that flame!"

Anthony, who made a name for himself instructing the highest levels of high-school Science, didn't hesitate when asked to teach some of Legacy's youngest students. "One of the big draws of 'coming down' and teaching at this level was the emphasis that Legacy puts on Science at such an early age. I am teaching my students concepts that seventh and eighth grade kids at my previous school are just being introduced to. Exposing them to real science at such an early age is so exciting as a teacher and matches the academic excellence at Legacy. Lots of elementary Science education at this level is usually, 'Oh, we have 10 minutes before school is out - let's pull out the Science textbooks.' It's not that way here."

After 11 years in the classroom, Anthony knows what the "end result" - high school Science education - looks like... and that informs how he teaches the elementary level. "So much of what I am teaching to the little guys is what older kids in the public realm don't get until seventh, eighth, ninth grade. The eagerness of Legacy's administration team to allow me to teach at an accelerated rate was a big draw, and one of the reasons I wanted to teach here."

"As parents, we are responsible to God for how we raise our children.
In Legacy Christian Academy we have found a school that embraces priorities and pursues goals that are important to us. The learning environment; the emphasis on Biblical character; the academic rigor; the personal care and attention from
faculty, staff and administration; the sense of family and community -
it all adds up to a remarkable education experience for our children."

Dr. Dianne G. Van Hook University Center at College of the Canyons to hold April 2018 Open House
Have you been putting off getting the bachelor's, master's or doctoral degree you need to advance in your career? Come to an Open House at the Dr. Dianne G. Van Hook University Center located on the College of the Canyons Valencia campus and find out just how doable getting your degree really is!
Held from 4pm to 7pm on Thursday, April 19, the Open House will provide prospective students with information about the bachelor's and master's degree programs offered through the Center by partner institutions, including CSU Bakersfield, CSU Northridge, University of La Verne, Brandman University and National University.
Attendees can talk to university representatives, learn about financial aid programs, meet with counselors and submit admissions applications. In addition, more information will be available on new programs to be offered in the center.
Scheduled to debut at the University Center in future semesters is a Doctoral Program in Organizational Leadership offered by University of La Verne. "This degree will enhance access for leaders to further their development in the public and private sectors," said Cathy Ritz, director of the University Center.
Since it opened in 2002, the University Center has enabled students to earn advanced degrees without leaving the Santa Clarita Valley. More than 3,000 students have graduated from the programs offered by the University Center's partners, Brandman University, CSU Bakersfield, CSU Northridge, National University and the University of La Verne.
The current 110,000-square-foot facility - which opened in 2009 - continues to offer bachelor's, master's and credential/certificate programs from various public and private universities, all of which have received approval and accreditation from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC).
Cited as the college's solution to the lack of upper division, graduate school and continuing education programs in the area, the University Center was established with a goal to increase student access to advanced degrees by forging partnerships with surrounding four-year colleges and universities. Those institutions then make their academic programs available to students through courses offered at College of the Canyons.
The University Center is best accessed via University Center Drive, the southernmost campus entrance on Rockwell Canyon Road. Parking in the campus parking lots 13, 14 and 15 is free for this event.

The Strong Foundation for your Child
by Joe Beran

In our increasingly-competitive society, strong foundations and effective preparation are the keys to success. This is true in business, government and especially in education. As technological advances move us forward at an ever-increasing pace, our schools are tasked with preparing students for jobs that don't even exist yet! How can that be done?
It starts with great preschools. Students entering Kindergarten coming from an academically oriented preschool demonstrate a distinct advantage over students who have not had such early preparation. Preschool students are being prepared for the classroom environment, mastering basic skills and are working collaboratively with other students. The socialization and organizational skills developed through nurturing preschools prepare kids for success in elementary school and beyond. Preschool prepared Kindergarteners enter elementary school better prepared academically, socially, emotionally and spiritually.
At Bethlehem Preschool, we ensure that your child is fit for future education. Our fun and faith-filled atmosphere creates an environment where children enjoy building relationships, learning the skills for their future education. Come visit us and see how your child can learn and grow in an environment that not only helps them to flourish as an individual, but also raises them up to be a life-long learner who can fill the jobs of the future.

SCVi Charter School: Where Technology is Integral to Learning
At SCVi Charter School, technology is a core component of everything they do. They strive to prepare every learner to become a thinker, innovator and leader in a rapidly-changing world - a world in which technology is an integral part of everyday life.
Their learners utilize technology in numerous ways, whether it's researching to gather multiple perspectives on a topic, learning about the physics of flight as part of our glider flight training program, or creating a science experiment that might be launched into space as part of DreamUp, the iLEAD Schools STEM learning project.
SCVi, the founding campus of iLEAD Schools, is a tuition-free public TK-12 charter school where they cultivate familiarity with technology from the earliest ages, and the knowledge children gain through research is applied to projects with real-life applications. They might use what they learn to build an item from scratch in their makery, or conduct a hands-on experiment to test a theory they've developed.
At SCVi, it's all about learning through "doing," in an environment where technology isn't a novelty - it's a tool to be used for thinking, learning and creating, every day.
SCVi Charter School, the founding campus of iLEAD Schools, is located at 28060 Hasley Canyon Road in Castaic. Tours are available by appointment. 705-4820
