Summer Fun Guide
June, 2011 - Issue #80
FOR KIDS
Keeping Busy, Having Fun
Unstructured time is essential for a child's growth and development. Every kid should have a chance to be mesmerized by a trail of ants or enthralled by the newest tween bestseller. But a summer entirely without focus can be wearing for both kids and parents alike. This is the time to discover great answers to the inevitable first-day-of-school question: "What did you do this summer?"

"I performed in a 'Broadway' show."

Camp VIBE Broadway
Every kid - at every level - is a star at Camp VIBE Broadway. Your little thespian will learn character development, voice and stage techniques. Five summer sessions are available (June 20 to June 24; June 27 to July 1; July 11 to July 22; July 25 to July 29 and August 1 to August 5); 255-7464 www.vibeperformingartsstudios.com

ESCAPE Summer Broadway Review
Children in the first through seventh grade who love to sing and dance will have a new "audience" (besides your dinner guests) to entertain this summer when you enroll them in ESCAPE's Broadway Review, beginning July 18. Convenient evening rehearsal times seal the deal for busy parents; 299-5264

"I (finally) learned how to conquer algebra."

Math Support Services
Yes, math and science can be fun - when you no longer feel lost in a world of algorithms and confusing formulas. Math Support Services offers junior-high and high-school courses in math, chemistry and physics (Honors credit is available, too!). The five-week course, which begins June 22 (So hurry!), is entirely transferable to the William S. Hart School District. Private options, scholarships and student loans are available, too; 255-1730 www.mathsupportservices.com

"I walked the catwalk in a fashion show."

Ms. Mardi's Modeling Workshop for Girls
On Tuesdays and Thursdays, July 5 through July 28, girls 8 to 17 years old will learn self-image analysis, hair and nail care, time management, modeling, etiquette, speech, fitness, nutrition and goal setting. Your daughter will also participate in a photo shoot and fashion show finale. She'll never walk, talk or look the same after this workshop (In a good way. Say "goodbye" to the slouch, poor manners and questionable fashion choices!) Ms. Mardi has been teaching girls and women since 1977; 252-3232 www.missscvpageants.com

"I mastered the balance beam."

Wallers' GymJam Academy Summer Day Camp

Now in session, your 4 to 12 year old will love the high-energy excitement a day at Wallers' GymJam provides. Early and late drop off are available for your convenience; 251-3390 www.gymjamacademy.com

"I made this tie-dye tee-shirt."

Give yourself the gift of a little time (and sanity) and treat your kids to a chance to flex their creative muscles. Craft Camp, available each week from June 28 through August 3, is designed to suit girls and boys ages 5 and older. A different craft is planned each day that works within a different theme each week. All supplies for the craft are included in one low cost. (And there's a Sibling Discount. Score!) If Golf is on your Summer Bucket List...
Know that success may start with your feet. The biomechanics of golf make your feet as important to the success of your swing as any other part of the body. Getting and keeping your feet in the right position to help properly carry the force of the swing can be impacted by the shoes you wear, explains Dr. Tony Avakian, DPM, of Valencia Foot & Ankle Center (288-2321).

Improper golf shoes can bring on blisters, neuromas and other pain in the feet. Whichever style you choose, look for shoes that are lightweight, well-cushioned in the soles and heels, made from a breathable material, water resistant and offer traction. The middle of the shoe should feel a little tighter than your everyday shoes to support your swing, advises Avakian.

And whether golf is your sport of choice or another activity has your attention, make sure to take good care of your feet - especially in the summer. "Your running style, quality of footwear, and even minor limb length differences can contribute to injury," says Dr. Robert Abrams, DPM, of the Footcare Center of Santa Clarita (253-3668). He advises that you wash your feet daily (and dry thoroughly); wear only high-quality, well-fitting socks; always use the correct shoe for each sport and surface and get in shape, because being overweight places added stress on the feet.

...And Prepare
You should always carry an abundant supply of food and water in your car in a backpack that you can take with you if you need to exit the vehicle. Some earthquake supply stores carry food and water with a shelf life of up to seven years. Any essential medications should also be kept in your car, especially for illnesses like diabetes. Also, diapers and other special necessities are a must. Basic tools, such as flashlights with extra batteries, may also come in handy. A set of good quality jumper cables and flares are a good idea, too. You should also have a full change of clothing and walking shoes. Of course, an operating cellular phone can be your savior. Another must-have: a disposable camera. In the case of an accident, the camera should be used to take photographs of all of the cars involved and the area where the accident occurred, as well as the injured parties, if applicable; Law Offices of Barry L.
