"A Series of Unfortunate Events: The End" can be the Beginning of a Love for Reading
February, 2007 - Issue #28
Are you searching for a good book to read? I recommend the 13th book in the "Series of Unfortunate Events" series appropriately titled "The End." This novel in the last book (obviously) in the series by author Lemony Snicket featuring the Baudelaire orphans: Violet, Klaus and Sunny.

As the book begins, the Baudelaire orphans are adrift in a small boat in the middle of the ocean with the evil Count Olaf. A terrifying storm quickly approaches, causing their boat to be torn apart and separating the Baudelaires from the villain. When the storm subsides, the three siblings find themselves washed up on a coastal shelf along with much more debris brought in by the storm. After a little exploring, they come across Count Olaf and he follows them in search of an island. On the horizon, a white figure is spotted. It turns out to be a little girl, who introduces herself as Friday. She decides to abandon Olaf on the coastal shelf because of his rude nature and takes the Baudelaires to the nearby island.

Friday takes the three siblings to meet the island's leader, Ishmael, who teaches them many of the island's customs. They are forewarned by Ishmael "... don't rock the boat." Next, they watch a ceremony where everybody presents Ishmael with items they scavenged from the storm. He decides what the colonists can keep and the rest is dragged into the arboretum on the other side of the island.

Another storm soon hits and the siblings discover their good friend, Kit Snicket, washed up on the coastal shelf. After a discussion, the colony (mostly Ishmael) decides to abandon Kit and the Baudelaires for all the "boat-rocking" they have caused on the island. Later that night, a couple of colonists sneak out on to the coastal shelf to tell the orphans of their plan to have a mutiny the next morning. The three siblings are sent to the arboretum to hunt for some sort of weapon. Violet, Klaus and Sunny find more than that.

What new mysteries will unfold in the arboretum? What unfortunate events follow the attempted mutiny? You will have to read "The End" to find out what happens next.

Lemony Snicket is one of my favorite authors so I am sad that this is the end. Throughout his books he employs a unique and entertaining writing style filled with new vocabulary and interesting plot twists. If you have not read any of the series, I highly recommend them. I am sure if you read the first book ("The Bad Beginning"), you will be inspired to read the rest.

It is an unfortunate event when Jolie does not have a book in her hand. Make review suggestions by e-mailing review@insidescv.com.
