There have been some recent changes, and Medicare is now requiring all pharmacies that accept Medicare payments for medical equipment or diabetes testing items to go though "Medicare Accreditation."

Many pharmacies have chosen not to participate in this process, and, as a result, they can no longer accept your Medicare card for diabetes testing supplies or home medical equipment (canes, walkers, scooters, etc.).

If your pharmacy has not gone through this accreditation process, they may ask you to pay cash for medical equipment or diabetes testing supplies and then try to get Medicare to reimburse you for the cost.

You do not need to do so, however. If you make sure that you are working with a Medicare-accredited pharmacy, they are able to bill Medicare directly for these items. Medicare-accredited pharmacies participate in rigorous training and screening; these pharmacies are held to a higher standard for patient care and privacy practices. Medicare-accredited pharmacies offer expert care; their entire staff has participated in the Medicare accreditation training and testing process.
