Newest FDA-approved Way to Sustain Natural Motion with Artificial Disc Replacement
New Technology Shows Higher Success Rates
than Anterior Discectomy & Fusion

Here's great news for people with a "bad" neck or spine. Patients using Artificial Disc Replacement Technology (ADRT) have two-times less chance of developing a disc disease adjacent to the level of disc replacement when compared to patients whom opted for bone-fusion surgery.
But that's not the only draw of ADRT. There are no invasive keels or screws required for ADRT placement amongst your vertebrae - and no bone chiseling, either. (No bone chiseling eliminates operative steps and preserves the vertebrae for a stable surface ideal for one or two-level implantation.). With ADRT, you're free to bend your neck left to right, front to back, as well as rotate - wonderful news for those worried that surgery means immobility.

This FDA-approved technology, implanted over 40,000 times in 25 countries, has three parts. The two metal plates and a medical grade polyethylene insert in the middle features a top plate that rotates over the domed insert. The insert slides across the bottom plate, left-to-right and front-to-back up to 1mm in any direction. The insert also twists over the bottom plate. The two tabs on the bottom plate provide a safety stop designed to control movement and keep the insert in place.
This new technology has proven to be effective in disc replacement; in fact, it has shown higher success rates than anterior discectomy and fusion (ACDF) at all timepoints in a recent study. Of course, not everyone is a candidate for disk replacement.

ADRT is for patients who've tried at least six weeks of medical treatments like medicine and physical therapy prior to surgery or have signs that their condition is worsening, even with medical treatments. This procedure is not indicated for all patients who need neck or spine surgery. Only a limited number of surgeons have been trained to implant ADRT, including Dr. Asher Taban. Consult with a specialist to determine if ADRT is right for you. www.drashertaban.com

Less Pain & No Chemicals: The Sweetest Skin Co.'s Organic Hair Removal is Sugary
We're sweet on sugar hair removal for a variety of reasons, but the most delicious might be that the sticky formula used on the most private of parts isn't only organic - it's so pure, you can actually eat it. Women (And men!) are flocking to the yummy shop in Old Town Newhall to suck on an organic lollypop while receiving their Sweetest Brazilian (Or Manzillion!) because the vegan, cruelty-free treatment is faster and less painful than most have come to expect from a hair-removal experience.
"Because sugar hair removal only removes dead skin cells, leaving live cells unharmed, the room-temp product leaves skin 'happier,' never red or burning. It hurts so much less during and after the service," says Founder Angela Lark. "That's why so many of our clients are now expanding their 'sugar territory' beyond the intimate area and onto their faces, chests, tummies, backs and legs. We do a lot of brows and Brazilians, but once you feel how calm and silky your skin feels after sugaring, it gets addicting! The results last a long time and in-growns are prevented, too, because sugaring doesn't damage the hair follicles." Want to give organic vegan sugaring a try? New clients get 15 percent off their first sugar service with mention of Inside SCV Magazine and everyone can take advantage of their Anniversary Special: a paraben-free airbrush tan and bikini sugar session for $75 or tan and Brazilian sugar for $95. 476-5775

Sodium is Enemy Number One
We all love to eat and, as we grow older, our choices become more important. Diet ranks right up there with medication reminders, and could take volumes to discuss - space we do not have here! It's important to determine the difference between preference and restrictions. Comfort Keepers consults with a client's physicians, and has actually created a Comfort Keepers Cookbook, comprised of client's favorite recipes of both preference and restriction dietary treats.
What's not prevalent in these cookbooks: Enemy Number One... Sodium. Sodium, which is a key ingredient in table salt, can cause an increase in your blood pressure, which can be increasingly dangerous if you do not take action to get plenty of potassium to counteract the effect. If you eat a large amount of sodium and fail to eat the proper amount of potassium, which is found in foods such as spinach and bananas, you will have an increased risk of experiencing a serious heart attack. According to experts, anyone over the age of 51 should not have more than 1,500 milligrams of salt each day. To put this into perspective, one teaspoon of salt has 2,300 milligrams. Consult with your doctor for more information.
