Want a Healthier Smile? Drink Up
Water - especially water with fluoride - is a key element to keeping your smile healthy and cavity free. Next time you're thirsty, reach for water over alcohol, sodas and energy drinks.

Water cleans your mouth with every sip, rushing cavity- and stain-causing food and residue away from your teeth.

H2O dilutes acids produced by the bacteria in your mouth, which could erode your enamel.

When your saliva supply is depleted from dehydration, you're at risk for dry mouth - and tooth decay. Your salivary glands help keep teeth strong by exposing them to phosphate, fluoride and calcium in your saliva. Give them a helping hand by staying hydrated.

Growing Up in a Time of Wonders: Benjamin Leach, MD
Medical oncologist Benjamin Leach, MD, recently joined City of Hope. Leach is among the latest generation of oncologists who have studied the field of oncology amid the shift toward precision cancer medicine, in which cancer treatment is more personalized. Leach said, "Those of us who have come up in this era have been well versed in the latest targeted therapies and immunotherapies since the beginning."

Between medical school at Tulane University and his residency at USC in Los Angeles, his passion for cancer care grew. A rotation in oncology gave him firsthand experience working with critically-ill patients. "Cancer care is unique because you embark on a journey with your patients," Leach explained. Leach's fellowship at New York-Presbyterian Hospital gave him the opportunity to work on the front lines of research on colon cancer. Scientists at City of Hope conduct similar research across many types of cancer, which is one reason Leach was excited to join the center.

"The center has a great reputation for research and taking care of patients," Leach said. Leach maintains an interest in colon cancer, but he also treats a wide range of cancer types. He is currently building his practice at City of Hope's community practice site in Mission Hills.

"One great thing about the community practice sites like the one in Mission Hills is our ability to offer the state-of-the-art treatments that City of Hope is known for," Leach said. "I think that's a good thing for City of Hope and for our patients."

Get the Tissues! A Remarkable Twist of Fate
When you're a trauma surgeon, you never know how a "day at the office" will play out. Dr. Alon Antebi at AVORS was recently reminded of a particularly trying case that happened over a half decade ago.

"Six years ago today, my son Zac had a traumatic motorcycle accident. His prognosis was not good. Once he was stable, he had several surgeries and we weren't sure of the orthopedic outcome. He was told that he may never run again; he was broken from head to toe," shared Robin on social media. "With Dr. Antebi's incredible talent, Zac is living a healthy life as a new dad. Thank you! You forever hold a special place in this family's heart," she concluded.

It's not unusual for Dr. Antebi to receive heartfelt letters of gratitude from patients and their families. What is unusual: to receive them from their employees!

"At the time, Robin didn't work for our company, AVORS. Only through a twist of fate did we eventually share the same office," says Dr. Antebi. "It's so fulfilling to see my patients active again and to hear that they are not only pain free, but that they've regained mobility and a life that they thought they'd never have again. It's a feeling that I can't quite describe. To have Robin as part of our team gives us the opportunity to hear about how Zac is doing. To know that he's a new parent and living the life he wanted to live - that's why I am an orthopedic surgeon and why I do trauma."

Is your Senior Eating Healthy?
Healthy eating and proper nutrition can be difficult at any age, but for seniors, maintaining good nutrition can be challenging. Those with aging loved ones should help with meal planning and dine together as often as possible. Meals together can help seniors struggling with loneliness, poor diet and medication management. Here's simple ways to help your senior shop for good food to eat right.
Plan and make a list. Sit down with your loved one and make a list of what he or she wants to eat for the week. This planning saves time and money.
Invite a friend. Companionship helps your senior's social needs and can make the task of grocery shopping easier and more fun.
Shop the store perimeter. Do your shopping on the perimeter of the store where most of the fresh, healthier foods are located.
Avoid convenient, processed foods. Don't be tempted to buy prepackaged meals; most of these foods lack nutritional value that many seniors require.
Look for ways to hydrate more. In addition to water, look for foods like watermelon, popsicles and low-sodium soups that are hydrating. Or, look for ways to enhance water, such as a splash of juice or adding fruit like lemons and limes.
