Don't Delay your Care
Did you know that one in four people surveyed for a Harris Poll said they would rather stay home if they experienced a heart attack or stroke than risk getting infected with COVID-19 at a medical facility?
At Providence Holy Cross, your health is their highest priority. That's why they are doing everything possible to protect you.
Everyone who walks through their doors - doctors, staff and patients alike - is screened for symptoms of coronavirus and provided with a mask - and those with symptoms are immediately isolated. They've increased the frequency of deep cleaning and disinfection throughout hospitals and clinics and strictly adhere to universal masking and social distancing.
If you are experiencing a medical emergency, or need a surgical procedure or test, do not hesitate to go to the emergency department or hospital for immediate care. Delaying evaluation, diagnosis and treatment can place you at risk. And don't miss a regular check-up or health screening, either. If you're overdue, it's important to schedule your appointment.

Use it or Lose It
Maximizing your Dental Benefits Before the End of the Year

If your dental benefits plan is like most others, it will reset on a calendar year basis, which means you'll lose out on all unused benefits after December 31. Dental insurance companies provide you a specific dollar amount to spend on your care each calendar year. This means you may have dental dollars that will disappear when your plan renews on January 1.
Many dental benefits carriers provide coverage for two routine checkups per every calendar year and most dental plans cover preventative services at 100 percent, so you will likely have little to no out-of-pocket expense associated with this visit.
If you've been putting off getting those cavities repaired, or require more extensive restorative treatment, the end of the year is the perfect time to get started. This is especially true if you've already met your child's annual deductible and have dollars remaining of your maximum. It's a double whammy - in addition to losing your child's unused benefits by delaying treatment, you will also be required to pay your deductible again.

Celebrate the Big 5-0 with a Hearing Screening for Better Health
By having a hearing screening at age 50, you'll provide your hearing specialist with a baseline they can use to compare against future tests. You'll also get ahead of issues like tinnitus, which are easier to treat when it's not severe. Your audiology team will examine your ears for wax and check the skin around your ears for any abnormal lesions - plus, you'll benefit from preventative measures to preserve the hearing you have. Your audiologist can often see a pattern of hearing loss starting before you do - so don't miss a chance to discuss hearing protection and preservation before real loss occurs.

Should You get the Flu Shot this Year?
As concern over COVID continues to consume so many of us, health experts are increasingly worried that we won't take this flu season seriously enough. Here's what we all should keep in mind:
Too many people with the flu or flu-related complications could put added pressure on our already overwhelmed health care system.
Getting the flu, as with other pre-existing lung diseases, can increase our risk of COVID-19 complications - and patients who contract both diseases are more likely to end up in the hospital or to die.
CDC Prevention Director Robert Redfield says, "This fall, nothing can be more important than to try to increase the American public's decision to embrace the flu vaccine with confidence. This is a critical year for us to try to take flu as much off the table as we can."
Put on a mask and go get your flu shot - especially those who are at higher risk of flu and flu-related complications, including seniors, people with compromised immune systems and those with chronic medical conditions.

City of Hope | Santa Clarita Radiation Oncology:
State-of-the-Art Technology & Increased Comfort

Local services for cancer patients are about to get an upgrade when City of Hope | Santa Clarita Radiation Oncology completes its move to a new facility. The clinic will be brighter and larger, with new state-of-the-art radiotherapy equipment.
"A prime motivator for the move is to upgrade the entire treatment experience," said May Lin Tao, MD, MS, assistant clinical professor of radiation oncology at City of Hope. The new location will be at 26357 McBean Parkway, Suite 150, in Santa Clarita. Consultations there begin on November 9, 2020, and treatment will commence on November 16.
One pivotal element of the move is the installation of the leading-edge Varian Halcyon system for radiation treatment. The machine is optimized for patient comfort, furnishing a softly lit, soothing environment. Importantly, the Halcyon system reduces treatment time by as much as half — saving patients both time and discomfort.
The new radiation oncology site is just one more element of City of Hope's commitment to providing hope and healing to the people of the Santa Clarita Valley. "We're dedicated to maintaining the best possible cancer outcomes for our patients," said Caitlin Gomez, MD, City of Hope assistant clinical professor of radiation oncology.
