YOUR HOME   -   INSIDE SCV HOMES
A Classic Holiday with a Touch of the Eclectic
January, 2020 - Issue #184

Espresso cabinets pose pretty contrast with the ivory island and stacked-stone wall, all additions after a recent remodel. Bonus storage space was created after the removal of a dividing wall, which also increased natural light, filtered through the adjacent French doors.

Lisa Duncan's Valencia home could be considered your standard SCV tract house from the street, but only a glance inside would tell an entirely different story.

Lisa Duncan's New Year's Eve set table features a black velvet table runner with handpainted gold stars, her mom's brass candlesticks with black candles and decoupage clock faces she made herself - all atop a large-scale block-plaid tablecloth. The well-dressed mirror and pretty powder room carry the thematic elements.

The professional interior designer has customized her space from coffered ceiling to glowing wood floors, creating the feel and function of a home built just with her vision in mind.
Owner of Lisa Duncan Interiors (288-1124) on Walnut Street in Newhall, a sweet little shop brimming with unique home decor selections (Many crafted by Lisa herself.) and distinctive specialty gifts, the designer's personal aesthetic is classic - with no shortage of eclectic additions... and plenty of black.
"I love black accents," says the pro. "It's very grounding to any room, no matter your style or taste." The shade appears throughout the home, from French door finishing to Asian-influenced furniture.

The living room's star - the Christmas tree adorned with vintage ornaments Duncan inherited from her mother, as well as new finds - sparkles. An heirloom mirrored armoire, a custom wrought-iron handrail and Asian-inspired black chest boast coordinating garland. Distinctive decor finds were selected from Lisa Duncan Interiors in Newhall.

The holidays are some of Duncan's favorite times of year and give her the opportunity to display treasured possessions.
"My mom passed away when I was 19. She loved Christmas so much and collected gorgeous vintage ornaments. After she was gone, I inherited her collection and have added to it over the years, often during my trips antiquing on the East Coast. Her glass figurals - hand-blown shapes and faces - are some of my most beloved pieces."

A vintage inlaid table is reflected in the mirrored buffet; both are topped with a blend of antiques, vintage pieces and new designs available for purchase at Lisa Duncan Interiors.

When not working in her store, giving design consultations and creating new spaces for her clients, Duncan is entertaining. "I love hosting, setting a thematic table! What I don't like doing - the cooking!"

Duncan's home has evolved with the addition of new discoveries, like this coffee table crafted out of a repurposed door from an old California mission. The hand-hammered nails and door hardware are a rustic contrast to the dozens of glass bulbs that adorn the mantel.

The Duncan home is a physical embodiment of the very best parties - both are marked by a diverse guest list, blending old and new; bold and classic; eclectic and refined. The same can be said of Duncan's Newhall shop, where customers vy for unique holiday and home decor they continue to reach for season after season.
