An All-seasons Backyard Escape
September, 2017 - Issue #156

The structure of this outdoor room was designed to add visual weight and interest to the plain rear facade of the home. The result? A simply-stunning space that is welcoming, warm and an all-seasons escape from life's hustle and bustle.

Designer Tips
Use Wood to Add Warmth & Texture

Wood adds warmth and texture to the ceiling, creating interest throughout the long length of the room.

Add Layers of Light

Wall sconces were added to the rear of the house and the columns; chandeliers installed over the lounging and dining areas; and up lights mounted on the top of the beams to highlight the gorgeous ceiling, creating a gorgeous layer of light. Paired with existing landscape and pool lights, the backyard glows in the evening hours.

Designer Tips
Combine Form & Function to make a Great Space

Remote-controlled integrated solar shades and ceiling fans were added to the space to shelter the area from the hot afternoon sun. Infra-red ceiling-mounted heaters and a fireplace extend the use of the space into the evenings and cooler months of the year for a true four-season outdoor-living environment.

Blend Indoor & Outdoor Spaces
Think about replacing existing windows and sliders with a stacking-door system to create one large indoor/outdoor room.

Consider How You Want to Use your Outdoor Space
Dining, lounging and a fire side chat area were added to the existing barbecue island and pool area to increase communal space perfect for conversation. An outdoor TV makes the environment party ready when the big game is on.

Designer Tips
Mix it Up

While teak and wicker are the star materials in the outdoor furnishings and play well against the wood and stone of the structure, iron was added to the mix with the lighting, as well as great outdoor fabrics with lots of texture.

Don't Forget the Accessories
Treat your outdoor living spaces as you do your interiors to provide a truly comfortable space that you can't wait to be in.
