Modern Mediterranean
Farmhouse Mix Honors Family Memories
October, 2018 - Issue #169

Matt and Nicole Dierckman hired my RRI interior-design team to create spaces that reminded them of their home away from home, Ojai Valley Inn. The popular getaway is the perfect mix of modern Mediterranean with a touch of farmhouse - a perfect partner to their SCV abode.

The couple also hoped that we could cultivate the feeling and ambience of their Spanish wedding - all while accommodating their two young kids. Luckily, they love the child-friendly hue of blue as an accent when paired with more-neutral elements. The flexibility allows them to rotate pieces to coordinate with different seasons and styles, as well as swap out items that get "over loved" by their active family.

It was quickly obvious that this was a family open to vintage, unique finds, so my team and I were thrilled to introduce elements like a canoe shelf and the dramatic Spanish-style dining table that we paired with the farmhouse-island light fixtures.

But we didn't stop there. Custom sofas and a media unit helped balance the fusion of Spanish and rustic, and blue again played an integral role as a backdrop for patterns and textures on pillows and more.

DESIGNER TIP:
Try pairing the same textures, but in different colors, for an eclectic - but "put together" feel. Looking for that perfect "pop?" Vegetation - real or faux - will bring a space to life.

The goal was to create a lounge-type feel for the living room - where guests could truly relax as they enjoyed the Dierckman's vast tequila collection while hanging out. The key was to add a jaw-dropping variety of different textures and elements, mixing metals, woods, leathers, fabrics and patterns that work together to provide a "sit and stay a while" ambience that was all at once casual and put together.

Of course, we couldn't let the kitchen go without a complimentary look, so we finished the cabinets with a white glaze, paired beautifully with a darker island and more-traditional granite to honor the roots of the home.

DESIGNER TIP:
Make a big impact for just a little cash. Fun lighting helps a home stand out from the rest and tableware can transform a room without breaking the budget. This Spanish-style dishware brings in color and perky patterns without overpowering. Layer different plates, bowls and cutlery to avoid both "normal" and "formal" tradition.

DESIGNER TIP:
Unique accessories change the entire feel of a space. Greenery, fruit, vintage additions and "whatever catches your eye" bring a home to life.

DESIGNER TIP:
Be you! Lanterns, funky furniture, layered leathers... they all work together to create a space that's uniquely yours.
