A Pictoral Guide to Stone and Tile
October, 2006 - Issue #24
In Santa Clarita, it's all about the stone and tile. Forget fancy vacations; when it comes to disposable income, homeowners are opting for granite over Galapagos. Here's why...

"Travertine and porcelain are really popular for kitchen and bathroom flooring. The added convenience of easy maintenance that porcelain and ceramic tile provides is a big draw," says Hani Shamaoun of Ventura Marble & Tile.

Granite, the must-have stone in Santa Clarita, has even seen some changes to accommodate homeowners who lack the time and resources to undertake a formal countertop replacement. "By using a pre-fabricated and custom-cut slab of Rocksolid Granit, you can choose from over 20 colors and complete your countertop installation in two to three days," informs Granite Transformations owner Scott Viers.

Don't count out tile when it comes to keeping up with the proverbial Jones. Luxury options are available that will make the neighbors green with envy. Says Mike Olivas of Olivas Tils & Stone, Inc., "Glass is the latest trend in kitchen wall coverings and the premiere choice for kitchen wall tile. It's now much more affordable and capable of being used in a variety of styles as a border or in beautiful mosaics. The unique reflection of light hitting the glass make this type of tile a beautiful, yet practical choice."

In the end, a combination of both stone and tile may be what makes the biggest impact. "Today's homeowners have an awesome selection of travertine for floors and granite slabs for counters which, combined with handmade Gainey Ceramic, make these combinations the newest and hottest trend in custom home design," says Jodi Gragg of Advantage Tile Stone Design.

Just don't forget the practical side of tile. "To avoid stains, seal your grout within two weeks of installation and reseal every six months to a year depending on how heavily it's used," reminds Gary Rasberry of Designs to the Nines.

"Stone landscaping can really bring out the character of one's house, whether it's in the front yard or backyard. For a Tuscan setting, we recommend using a multi-blend stone and cultured stone facade, complemented by Tuscan pots in the garden," says
"Tiles are the optimal choice for your kitchen walls and kitchen floors since they are durable, strong enough to endure frequent cleaning, and are incredibly low maintenance," suggests Mike Olivas of Olivas Tile & Stone, Inc., 661-298-8589.

"Stone can be used for work on patios, paths, out-buildings, accent pieces and, of course, walls. The aesthetic and functional use of stone can even raise the value of your property," implies Tom Brockert of Prime Building Materials, 818-503-4242.

"Add metal tiles and accent glass into the mix and the result is an environment customized for the individual; an atmosphere that is both aesthetic and practical," says Jodi Gragg of Advantage Tile Stone Design, 661-295-9819.

"Travertine tile, characterized by its rich and creamy hues, has been used as a classic building material for centuries and provides that old world look," informs Hani Shamaoun of Ventura Marble & Tile, 661-298-3832.

Informs Gary Rasberry, owner of Designs to the Nines, "If you choose a grout that contrasts your tile in color, the grout lines must be near perfect to achieve a neat appearance," 661-257-9115.
