Alliance Seeks Volunteers to take Students to Work for a Day

Employers across Santa Clarita will see their shadow on Groundhog Day (February 2). The Ninth Annual National Groundhog Job Shadow Day is hosted locally by the Santa Clarita Valley School & Business Alliance.

Over 50 businesses have already committed to participating.

If you would like to host a student at your place of business on February 2, call Ann Kerman at the Santa Clarita Valley School & Business Alliance office at 259-0033, extension 776. Students who would like to participate may pick up an application in their high school's career center.

Award-winning Journalist, TV Producer and Author to Headline Women's Conference

Linda Ellerbee began her career at CBS, and then moved to NBC News, where, after years covering national politics, she pioneered the late-night news program, "NBC News Overnight," which she wrote and anchored.

In 1987, Ellerbee and Rolfe Tessem, her partner, quit network news to start Lucky Duck Productions. In 1991, Lucky Duck began producing "Nick News" for Nickelodeon, with Ellerbee writing and hosting.

The Antelope Valley Women's Conference 2006 is set for Friday, April 7 at the AV Fairgrounds. Themed "Explore the Possibilities," the event promises to empower, celebrate and inspire women. Seminars will cover finance and entrepreneurship; self; home, family, and children; and women's health.

Local Biz Offers Free SAT Prep

Lighthouse Learning Center of Valencia will provide a free SAT Prep Exam on February 4. The realistic no-obligation practice exam will help prepare students for the real thing. Additionally, scholarships are now available for SAT Prep courses, funded by local businesses. The cost of these courses, usually $250, will be waived for the selected students.

Little School of Music Grand Opening

On February 2, the Little School of Music, located at 26111 Bouquet Canyon Road #G5 (behind IHOP), will host their ribbon cutting ceremony from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. As a sign of gratitude, attendees will receive 50 percent off of registration. New Education Center for COC, Canyon Country

Located on a 70-acre site along Sierra Highway, the Canyon Country Educational Center will be open for classes in 24,000 square feet of modular buildings in the 2006-07 school year, and is expected to draw 3,000 students from the eastern Santa Clarita Valley.

The first permanent building on campus could start construction as early as 2007. The State of California has approved an $18 million allocation in capital outlay funds for a 50,000-square-foot building.
