What Happens to your Social Media when You Die?
So much of our lives are being lived online. So, what happens when you die? Each social media platform has their own rules for deceased users, ranging from permanent deletion to conversion into a memorialization. Each social media platform has their own process which may change over time.
However, there are some steps you can take to give your loved ones control over your social media accounts upon your death.
Create a digital asset plan that lists all of your digital assets, including email addresses, and instructs your family on which accounts should be closed and which should be memorialized.
Create legal documents that will give them access to control your social media accounts, such as a will or power of attorney.
Create and secure a list of the ways to access your social media and email accounts. Include usernames, passwords and other necessary information. But be careful to store this information in a secure and private fashion, such as using a written letter placed in a sealed envelope that is only to be opened upon your death.
Keep your documents current. Social media platforms will update their processes and policies, and you'll likely change passwords periodically as well as open or close accounts.
