What Happens to Social Media After Death?
Without realizing it, much of our life has moved online. Social media has replaced the old photo albums and diaries when it comes to documenting our lives. To make matters worse, social media is style evolving as new features and companies come online. So how to deal with social media of a loved one who has passed?
Begin by gathering information about what social media accounts that may exist. Start with the large platforms, like Facebook, Instagram, X and others. Other platforms can be discovered by checking their email for notifications and performing online searches of their name and aliases.
Look through the posts, photos and videos. Save anything important or memorable. Once an account has been closed, those items may be permanently lost.
Determine whether to memorialize or close each account. Some services, such as Facebook, permit loved ones to memorialize an account by submitting a death certificate or will.
Some social media companies are allowing users to proactively name a trusted contact to gain some or total control over digital assets after death. For example, Facebook allows for users to name a "Legacy Contact" while Google has introduced a tool called "Inactive Account Manager." Each company has their own program and the amount of access can differ wildly so some research will need to be done for each platform.
