When to Update your Estate Plan
Your estate plan might be perfect when it was created. But over the years and decades, that plan will reflect your life and wishes less and less. Here are some situations where you might need to discuss your estate plan with an attorney.
Major Life Events
Certain life events can have a huge impact on your estate plan. Anything that impacts who would be in charge or how property will be distributed is a major life event. Examples of major life events can include marriage or divorce; birth or adoption of a child or grandchild; death of a spouse, child or beneficiary; you or a key individual moving to a new state; significant change in financial situations; retirement; and changes in wishes. As your life changes, your priorities may change. You may want to change who serves as your executor, makes decisions when you're incapacitated or how property will be distributed.
Changes in Law
Changes in law can cause changes in the estate plan. What might have made sense years ago no longer offers the same benefit or protection today. It's a good idea to review your plan with an attorney to make sure it remains maximally effective.
When in Doubt, Review It
If you aren't sure whether an estate plan needs to be updated or revised, it's best to discuss your plan with your estate planning attorney. Your attorney can quickly identify hidden issues to ensure your plan accurately represents your wishes and will work as intended.
