Creating an estate plan can be a huge step towards protecting your loved ones. But what happens next?
Most of the hard work is done. But there are a few things that you can do to improve the chances of your plan being carried out without a hitch.
Make sure important people have a copy of your plan. Whether it's your children, the agents who are supposed to act or other important people in your life, make sure they have a copy of your estate plan, or at least know where to get one, so they can act quickly when the time is right.
Make sure that all of your property is protected. That might mean making sure your house has been transferred into your trust. You may want to have bank accounts or other assets retitled into your trust. If you have beneficiaries, make sure they are up-to-date and included in your estate planning binder.
Update your plan as needed. The estate plan is a snapshot of what you want at that time. You may need to update it periodically. Reasons for updating your plan can be varied. Maybe when a child becomes a mature, responsible adult. Perhaps there is a marriage, divorce or remarriage of yourself or one of your heirs. Maybe an important person moves away or becomes unavailable. There are just a few of the reasons an estate plan may need to be updated.
