Keeping Up with Ken
Q & A with Santa Clarita City Manager Ken Striplin
September, 2024 - Issue #233

Q: Many people choose Santa Clarita as the place to call home because of our incredible parks system - and word is that several upgrades are in the works. What can residents expect?
It is an exciting time for parks in our city, with enhancements, expansions and new locations on the horizon! Bouquet Canyon and Valencia Glen Parks are both sporting fresh looks. These parks have received new playgrounds equipped with accessible features and shade structures, perfect for sunny days. Bouquet Canyon Park now boasts a tandem zip track, similar to the one at West Creek Park, while Valencia Glen Park has expanded its play area to offer more inclusive elements for families and friends. Looking ahead, David March Park and Old Orchard Park are set for major renovations. David March Park will expand by an impressive eight acres, featuring a state-of-the-art baseball field with spectator seating, a new restroom building and a larger parking lot. Enhancements will also include a new basketball court, shade canopy, exercise equipment and a picnic pavilion. Starting this fall, Old Orchard Park will undergo a complete transformation, including new playground equipment, a shade structure, restroom improvements and a pickleball court overlay on the existing basketball court. The park will also see upgrades to the parking lot and the addition of a multisport court. These improvements aim to provide residents with more recreational options and enhanced park experiences. On the horizon, the Santa Clarita City Council has approved the transfer of ownership of the historic 156-acre William S. Hart Park from the County of Los Angeles. This monumental transition will be a landmark addition to the city's park system next year.
"It's a celebration of past achievements, FUTURE POSSIBILITIES and the spirit of a community that makes Santa Clarita one of the best cities in the nation to live, work and play."

Q: The River Rally is back! What location has been chosen this year and what can residents expect at this eco-friendly event?
The hometown-favorite 29th Annual River Rally Clean Up and Environmental Expo will be held on Saturday, September 21, from 8am to 11am at the William S. Hart Pony Baseball and Softball Complex at 23780 Auto Center Court. This environment-focused event invites Santa Clarita residents to help clean up the Santa Clara River, one of Southern California's last natural, free-flowing river systems. Volunteers of all ages will work together to remove debris from the riverbed. Participants should wear closed-toe shoes, appropriate clothing and sun protection like sunscreen and hats. Bringing a filled, reusable water bottle is recommended, as water refill stations will be available and eco-friendly. To reduce waste, plastic water bottles will not be provided. In order to remain environmentally conscious, I encourage volunteers to use transportation options such as carpooling, walking, public transportation or biking, with a free bike valet provided by Incycle. Residents can expect a fulfilling experience, knowing they are making a positive impact on their local environment while connecting with their community. Q: State of the City is next month. What is this event about and
why is it important?

The annual State of the City event highlights major projects, provides division updates and informs the public about the work our city does on behalf of our residents every year. The theme, inspired by the 2024 Summer Olympics, is Gold Medal City. Attendees will see and hear all about what makes our city the best. This year, attendees can anticipate insights into significant achievements from the past year and a sneak peek into exciting future initiatives. From the intricacies of public safety and financial budgeting, to the unveiling of new park projects, the Santa Clarita City Council aims to provide a comprehensive overview of what's on the horizon for our community. They will also share updates on upcoming city amenities, such as the Valencia Community Center, Hart Park and the much-anticipated Roller Rink. State of the City is more than an event - it's a celebration of past achievements, future possibilities and the spirit of a community that makes Santa Clarita one of the best cities in the nation to live, work and play.
The State of the City will take place on October 17 at 3pm at the Canyon Country Community Center. For more information about this event, please contact Communications Administrative Assistant Billie Abreu at babreu@santaclarita.gov.
