Q: The upcoming November election will mark a big change in the way Santa Clarita City Councilmembers are elected. What does district voting mean for residents?
Ballots are going to look different this election cycle. Previously, our councilmembers were elected using an at-large election system, where all registered voters in the City of Santa Clarita could vote for council candidates for all open seats. Pursuant to the terms of a settlement agreement, the city has transitioned to district-based elections for the city council seats, starting with this year's 2024 city council election. In this new, by-district election system, the City of Santa Clarita is divided into five districts and each voter within a district may cast one vote for a candidate residing within that same district. The city has always operated staggered elections, meaning two out of the five seats will be up in November 2024. Councilmembers serve staggered four-year terms, so the remaining three district seats will be up for election starting in November of 2026. If you would like to learn more about the process of the transition to district voting, or find out what district you live in, please visit santaclarita.gov/districtelections.

Q: Halloween is right around the corner! How can residents ensure a safe and fun night of fright? As Halloween approaches, Santa Clarita offers a variety of festive activities that everyone can enjoy. Whether you're trick-or-treating with the kids or attending gatherings with friends and family, keeping safety in mind is essential.
With the increased foot traffic on Halloween, drivers must stay vigilant. To ensure safety, please minimize distractions, such as phone use, reduce speed in residential areas and stay particularly alert for trick-or-treaters near crosswalks. Pedestrians can also contribute to safety by using designated crosswalks, making eye contact with drivers and putting phones away while crossing the street. Keeping a close watch on excited children and following the "Heads Up!" rule - see and be seen - will help everyone enjoy a safe Halloween.
Before heading out, remind your kids to stick with their group and wait for an adult before crossing the street. Consider adding reflective tape to costumes or giving out glowsticks to improve visibility. If your children are old enough to venture out on their own, set a return time and emphasize the importance of staying together and always avoid entering a strangers' home.
By keeping these safety tips in mind, you can focus on what truly matters this Halloween: creating fun and memorable experiences with your loved ones while ensuring everyone stays safe.
