Keeping Up with Ken
Q & A with Santa Clarita City Manager Ken Striplin
February, 2026 - Issue #247

Q: We understand that the City of Santa Clarita recently marked a special milestone. What are the highlights of 38 years of cityhood?
When our city was incorporated on December 15, 1987, the City founders hoped that local control would continue to enhance the quality of life for all who call Santa Clarita home. Thanks to their hard work to form our city, millions of tax dollars have stayed right here. Those funds have gone toward our 40 parks, 13,000 acres of open space, three libraries, three community centers, The Cube Ice and Entertainment Center powered by Valencia by FivePoint, the bike park, skate park, nine city pools, more than 100 miles of off-street trails and so much more. In addition, Santa Clarita continues to rank as one of the safest cities in the nation thanks to our partnership with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station and our vigilant residents. Cityhood has truly cemented Santa Clarita as one of the most sought-after communities to raise a family, work and play.

"Then, in the fall, we will celebrate the grand opening of The Rink Sports Pavilion. The roller-skating rink will feature overlays for basketball, pickleball and volleyball, making it a versatile hub for a WIDE RANGE of activities."
Q: As we celebrate the new year, what is on the horizon for our city in 2026?
We have much to look forward to this year. This spring, we will see the completion of the upgrades and expansion to David March Park. This project will introduce a new baseball field, complete with stadium seating and field lights. The eight-acre expansion will also include a new restroom building, the city's second exercise staircase and additional parking. The project includes enhancements to the existing park, including a lit basketball court, additional shade structures, a picnic pavilion and updated cornhole and horseshoe pits. Then, in the fall, we will celebrate the grand opening of The Rink Sports Pavilion. The roller-skating rink will feature overlays for basketball, pickleball and volleyball, making it a versatile hub for a wide range of activities. The facility will also include spectator seating, a DJ booth with sound and lighting capabilities, designated space for special events and a commercial kitchen and concessions area. We look forward to welcoming the community to these new amenities this year.

Q: What about the city's amazing lineup of events? What can we look forward to this year?
Join us for one of the most inspirational city events that grows in size every year: the annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Unity Walk. This year's walk will take place on MLK Day, Monday, January 19, 2026, at 9am in Central Park. A brief program will highlight young voices from our community, musical performances and more. After the program, join your neighbors, family and friends for the walk to continue the conversation. As we move further into the year, we can look forward to the Santa Clarita Cowboy Festival, SENSES Block Parties, Celebrate and Concerts in the Park presented by Logix Federal Credit Union.
