Soroptimist's Bras and Bags for a Cause
Channeling Creativity for Breast Cancer Treatment
September, 2006 - Issue #23
Every 12 minutes someone dies from breast cancer.

There is no better way to kick off Breast Cancer Awareness Month than to support the third annual Bras for a Cause event sponsored by Soroptimist International of SCV. On Sunday, October 1, join in bringing awareness and raising funds for this important cause while enjoying one of the SCV's most unique events.

This year's event will take place from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Valencia Country Club. The club's ballroom will be transformed into an art gallery, filled with creations of all kinds. In years past, entries were eye popping, ranging from elegant wearable designs to floral explosions to Western-themed lingerie. Comical entries also had their place; one bra was made complete with knobs and a faucet - entered by a local plumbing company.

From simple to extravagant, anything goes as guests bid on over 100 decorated bras and purses. In addition, the event will include a variety of boutique vendors; many featured products are breast-cancer oriented. From jewelry, scarves and gifts to books and products promoting women's health, there is sure to be something for everyone.

A first this year will be the inclusion of decorated purses, something that Event Chair Lori Dalton hopes will keep the event fresh and interesting.

For Dalton, who joined the Soroptimist Club a year and a half ago, chairing this event was her way of "getting more involved." She explained that, "this is one of the most tight-knit, civic-minded communities that I have ever seen. And this event is symbolic of what we believe in - women of all ages and backgrounds joining together for a common goal - to help women and girls in our own community."

Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in women today and is the most common cancer among women, excluding non-melanoma skin cancers. According to the World Health Organization, more than 1.2 million people will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year worldwide. The chance of developing invasive breast cancer during a woman's lifetime is approximately one in seven or 13.4 percent.

For more than 20 years, National Breast Cancer Awareness Month has educated women about early breast cancer detection, diagnosis and treatment. The success of this event will make it possible for the Soroptimists to continue their local support of those with breast cancer through donations to the Sheila R. Veloz Breast Imaging Center. Money will also be used to raise awareness, aid in diagnosis and provide financial support to local women with breast cancer. Though this event has raised $20,000 each of the past two years, Dalton is hopeful that the third year will raise even more.

There are several ways to get involved. You have the opportunity to show your creativity and style by entering your own decorated bra or purse. These entries are $100 and can be made in honor, gratitude or in memory of someone special. For those who are creative- or time-challenged, a committee member will decorate your entry for an extra $50 donation, totaling $150.

Another new addition this year is the donor appreciation and thank you party hosted by Ginger LeVang and Citron Spa, to be held the week prior to the event. Wolf Creek Restaurant and Brewing Company has contributed appetizers, while wine is being donated by Vino 100. In this way, those entering bras and purses will be treated to a special evening with a sneak preview of all of the pieces.

The deadline for entering your bra or purse is September 9. Complete your registration online at www.brasforacause.com. The submission deadline for completed lingerie art is September 22.

Tickets for this fun and meaningful event are only $50 and include appetizers and wine, access to the boutique, a raffle and of course the auction of all of the bras and purses. Tickets can be purchased in advance from any Soroptimist member or by visiting SCV Bank, Citron Spa, Poka Dott Party Shop or Vino 100.
