Casa Canela
June, 2018 - Issue #165

Casa Canela Owners Orlando and Cristal Gutierrez's great-great grandmother sold crepes in the small Mexican city of Juchitlan, near Puerto Vallarta. Today, three generations of the Stevenson Ranch resident's family are in the restaurant business, sharing that same crepe recipe, as well as an expansive menu of homemade plates that take full advantage of the season's freshest ingredients.

This farm-to-table restaurant has a south-of-the-border twist, with spicy homemade sauces and plenty of nods to its heritage. The most surprising element isn't at the tip of the diner's fork, though, as much as it is in the smile of those who work here; every guest is sincerely treated like family.

We're Sweet on Casa's Crepes
Grandma's recipe is light and fluffy, never rubbery, thanks to the highest-quality milk and lower fat content. Whether topped with made-in-house strawberry jam or a savory mix (Like the Poblano, with chicken breast, poblano peppers, onions, corn, melted monterey cheese and poblano sauce!), the crepes are reason alone to visit Casa Canela. We were wowed by the Warm Apple Crepes with freshly-made apple compote (Nothing's from a can here!) and the decadent Strawberry Nutella Crepes served with fresh whipped cream. More of a pancake person? Casa's were strawberry topped and light as air.

We're Salivating Over the Savory Selections
The All-meat Omelette with hand-shredded Wisconsin monterey jack cheese is bursting with crisp bacon, ham and sausage, all folded up into a fluffy three-egg blanket of deliciousness. The portion generous, the side of homefries flavorful - and the plate? Licked clean.

Also amazing: The Trio Sopes. These fluffy, magical rounds are topped with chorizo and chicken, cotija cheese, cream and salsa. The Vegetarian Skillet was spilling over with piping-hot potatoes, sunny-side-up eggs with rich orange yolks, sauteed veggies and a heavenly chipotle sauce, which also makes a five-star appearance on the crisp and delicious Chicken Taquitos.

What to Drink
Everything! The full bar features cocktails made with handmade syrups; freshly-squeezed juice is always the star ingredient. Kick back on the well-appointed patio with the Cucumber & Jalapeno Margarita, a cooling blend of spice and "nice." The Mimosa with hand-pressed juice was tangy, bright and delicious - not too sweet; the Bloody Mary's spicy rim was the perfect accompaniment to the flavorful secret recipe; and the Michelada was bubbly perfection with just a hint of spice.

Where to Party
Casa Canela's restaurant is beautifully, comfortably appointed with a high ceiling, warm accents and a private room for parties. The star of the show, though, is their gorgeous patio. When you book an event for 50 or more, you are able to use the space after hours for free. Call for details.
Casa Canela is located at 27647 Bouquet Canyon Road in Santa Clarita. Follow them on Facebook for first access to their special offers and events. 523-7282
