The New Off Broadway Bistro Destined for Fame
December, 2007 - Issue #38
You always hear about people who want to make it on Broadway. The heck with that! Make your way to Off Broadway Bistro where every meal is a box office smash!

Off Broadway Bistro is the new place in town to see and be seen. Owner David Bucks is a true Hollywood mover and shaker and fills his place with big time Hollywood celebs and Rock & Roll mega stars. Okay, so they're all photos and memorabilia, but this is the real deal. David is a huge fan of everything entertainment. He has a spectacular collection of signed posters and album covers all over the walls and that alone is worth the visit.

David's been in the restaurant business for 35 years and has been involved in the opening and operation of several big-time restaurants that you all know and love. He's a super high-energy guy who spends almost as much time at each of his tables as his guests do. He serves, he visits, he schmoozes - I feel like I really am off Broadway.

OBB serves breakfast, lunch and dinner with an eclectic menu that has something for everyone. Breakfast includes items like the Bistro Frittata, the Dutch Baby, Hawaiian French Toast and Fresh Strawberry French Crepe Pancakes. Creative pizzas, soups and sandwiches round out this interesting menu. There is so much yummy stuff, I want to try it all. But for now, I'll stick with dinner.

David was in the mood to impress and I wasn't in the mood to stop him. The Native Main Lobster Ravioli ($17) with Newburg sauce was amazing. Big chunks of lobster generously fill each ravioli. They come served on a bed of creamy mashed potatoes with a drizzle of tarragon oil. The subtle licorice flavor of the tarragon adds a high note to the creamy sauce that is super yummy. The BBQ Baby Back Ribs ($19) rock! These babies come to the table caramelized and glistening in their deep, rich barbeque sauce. I was in heaven with the first bite. The meat was falling-off-the-bone tender, the sauce warm and sweet (honey and apricot) with a little kick (Szechwan) that brings on a slow burn that is mind-blowing good. The ribs are served with a homemade cole slaw and the coolest and tastiest skinny cut pommes frittes (French fries). Okay, I admit it, I'm addicted.

The Tequila Lime Chicken Fettuccini ($15) is prepared with cilantro, red and yellow peppers and served in a tequila-lime-cilantro-cream sauce. The fettuccini is cooked al dente and the sauce has lovely, lingering flavors.

Atop this colorful dish rest slices of beautifully-roasted chicken breast. This one is super satisfying, rich and creamy without being heavy. Loved it!
Okay, bring on the lasagna - show this little Italian girl what you're made of. You gotta work pretty darn hard to make an Italian dish that's gonna impress me. Well, I guess David must be a hard worker, because, frankly, I'm impressed. The Three Meat, Four Cheese, Five Hour Lasagna ($15) is gorgeous. The rich and meaty sauce made with beef, veal and pork is robust and deep in color - the sign of a well-cooked sauce. He layers parmesan, romano, mozzerella and provolone cheeses for tons of flavor, then bakes this masterpiece until the cheese on top is lightly browned and bubbling. This lasagna is simply superb and quite tasty (but don't tell my Italian grandma).

OBB offers an unusual line up of beers and wines, too. There are beers and ales from Ireland, Scotland, Germany, England and the Czech Republic all for $5 or $6. You really have no excuse not to try several. The wine list is equally eclectic with wines from California, France, New Zealand and Chile all served by the glass for $5.50 to $8 and by the bottle for $18 to $60. And, you guessed it, there's no reason not to try several of these as well.

No production is complete without a closing act - so David brings out dessert. The Chocolate Cake ($6) is dense and lush but not too sweet. This dessert would be excellent with a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon or a cup of coffee. The Pecan Pie ($4) is gloriously overflowing with big, fat pecans. It's very traditional and very satisfying. Off Broadway Bistro is the new smash hit sensation that everyone needs to see (and taste).
