Gardening Grows Excited Little Learners
Fall is a time for beginnings in school - and preschool especially! What could be a better introduction to pre-kindergarten than a project that provides fun, a sense of accomplishment, teaches math with measuring and spatial skills - and provides something yummy and healthy in the end?
Teacher Jillian's "garden" is the perfect class project that takes on a new look and life each year with the personality of each of its special little gardeners.
"We've grown everything from broccoli to peppers and cherry tomatoes," said Carol Bloom, director of CBS Preschool. "Watching their eyes light up when the first sprouts shoot from the ground is always a magical experience."
In addition to the already-amazing curriculum that has children ready and eager for Kindergarten, gardening is a natural way to keep their small hands involved in learning and planning. The act of planting and tending the vegetables provides both physical and mental education and works well with other lesson plans throughout the year. It turns out the kids love eating their own healthy bounty as well.
Each student feels a sense of personal pride and excitement that connects with a sense of lifelong responsibility and patience - virtues that not all adults have mastered. Besides, who doesn't want a 4-year-old who looks forward to eating salad?
