SCV Schools want your
Support on Measure E

Voters in the Newhall School District will be asked in November to approve a $60 million bond to upgrade school facilities. The bond, Measure E, is technically an extension of an earlier bond approved by voters in 1999. Property tax assessments for homeowners would remain at current levels if the new measure passes.

Board members Christy Smith and Mike Shapiro are co-chairing the bond campaign. All 10 schools in the district, which serves Newhall, most of Valencia, Stevenson Ranch and Westridge will benefit from the bond funds, says Smith.

"Measure E would provide technology upgrades on every campus," Smith says. "Energy improvements would save the school district money on utilities."

Other improvements include replacing and repairing portables on some of the campuses; repairing or replacing deteriorated roofs, lighting and electrical systems; and providing first-class science labs at all schools in the district.

The measure would also provide the funds necessary to renovate the auditorium at Newhall Elementary School. Built in 1941 as a WPA project, the auditorium is currently used as storage space. Once restored, the district would use the building for large group instruction and fine arts programming for students and the entire community.

Measure E will benefit residents with or without children in the Newhall District, says Superintendent Marc Winger.

"This is good for our schools, but it's also good for property owners. We are proud of our high-performing and well-maintained schools and we want to keep the facilities up with the demands of a modern and balanced instructional program," Winger said. "Our success in this bond extension effort and the quality of our schools will continue to contribute to high property values in the district."

Residents will vote on the measure on November 8.
