This Month, Why don't You...
(Make it Easier on Yourself Edition)
get the kids' hair cut before Grandma starts snapping photos? You'd never attend a holiday soiree without making sure your roots were touched up. But there goes Billy - with his hair in his eyes. Get the whole crew groomed and trimmed at Brow Bar Spa, which now offers a premier (meaning: bring your "tween" here without shame) "just for kids" salon experience. You can even book your appointment online; 295-2056

order in? You're tired. You're stressed. You're snapping at people. (Ok, they deserve it. But you're better than that, right? Right?) We give you permission to pick up the phone and call in reinforcements. In our house, "back up" takes the form of Oggi's Pizza & Brewing Company's pepperoni pie. (It's almost like having the perfect babysitter on speed dial. Except it's cheaper. A lot cheaper.) Yes, Oggi's does fantastic holiday catering, but don't wait for a big event to send out a "bat signal" in the shape of pizza crust. Because they offer free delivery within a four-mile radius (they're located in Canyon Country) with a $20 order or more, you'll be able to afford more frequent escapes to "Thank God Dinner is Done" Land; 252-7883

host a party? "Wait," you say to yourself. "This was supposed to be a list that would make my life easier." Yeah. We know. Hear us out. Our thinking is this: You'll be asked/guilted into hosting a get-together eventually. Why not do it now, when springing for a party set up is ridiculously easy and cheap? Party Planners Plus is offering a Winter Deal that had us doing a double take. For only $125 (including free local delivery!), you can rent four tables, four linens, 32 chairs and one outdoor heater (rates may vary on holidays).; 291-1222

Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital
Receives Recognition as Baby-friendly Birth Facility

Following a rigorous application process and a two-day onsite survey in September 2011 by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) representatives, Henry Mayo became one of only nine Baby-Friendly hospitals in Los Angeles County in November 2011.

The Baby-friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) is a global program sponsored by the WHO and UNICEF. The initiative encourages and recognizes hospitals and birthing centers that offer an optimal level of care for breastfeeding mothers and their babies. There are more than 2,000 designated Baby-friendly hospitals and birth centers worldwide, with 121 in the United States. Of that total, California leads the nation with 15 percent of its hospitals designated Baby-friendly, compared to the national average of 5 percent.

Through its breastfeeding efforts and activities, Henry Mayo increased its in-hospital breastfeeding initiation rate to 96 percent, with 76 percent of new mothers exclusively breastfeeding at discharge by the end of fiscal year 2011.

"Every step of the way, we had full administrative support," said Mary Beth Sweet, lactation specialist. "We have a vested interest in providing our community with the education and support to our breastfeeding mothers by helping to improve the overall health for mothers and babies in our care; Baby-friendly enables us to continue and excel at doing just that."

When babies are breastfed, both mother and baby are healthier throughout their lives. Breastfed babies have less childhood cancer and diabetes and a lower risk of being overweight or obese in childhood and adolescence compared to formula-fed children. Women who breastfeed face decreased risks of breast and ovarian cancer, anemia and osteoporosis.

With the benefits of breastfeeding too important to ignore, Henry Mayo began its quest in 2006 to encourage and promote breastfeeding among new mothers. At that time, 89 percent of mothers who gave birth at the hospital wanted to initiate breastfeeding and 48 percent exclusively breastfed at discharge;
