Skylar Kent
Skylar Kent
"My name is Skylar Kent and my lifetime dream has been to be a working actor and singer. It was at the age of 12 that I realized that I could do this for a living and get paid for doing something I loved. My career started in Amarillo, Texas with a Theater Company that provided me with training and opportunities to perform in front of people. My family and I moved to Santa Clarita Valley from Texas in January of 2016 to give me the opportunity to pursue my dreams; shortly thereafter I enrolled in classes at Santa Clarita School of Performing Arts (SCSOPA). Within a month of enrollment, I was signed with a print agent and a month later signed with Rascals Agency. After some patience and many classes I received an opportunity to audition for a Lifetime Movie Network project for which I was offered a supporting role. Other auditions have come my way and I look forward to many more opportunities in the business. SCSOPA is an amazing school where your dreams can come true. Mr. Mike and the instructors are absolutely amazing people and the talent they have to share with the community is out of the ordinary. I received so much more than I ever thought I would get from attending SCSOPA. There are numerous classes to choose from such as Voice Over, Private Voice, Monologue, Scene Study, Dance and Modeling, providing me an opportunity to improve my talent as I learn from the some of the best teachers around. The school has an added value of giving students an opportunity to audition for agents and managers who come into the school each and every Saturday. If you are serious about a career in acting, singing or modeling you can't pick a better place to go to school."

Pet Tip of the Month
You can Teach an Old Dog New Tricks

With shelters brimming with mature and senior dogs, it's important to note that "adult" does not mean "untrainable." The "puppy myth" implies that if you don't teach a pup at a young age to avoid bad habits and create new ones, behaviors become set in stone. In fact, adult dogs can be much easier to train! They have longer attention spans and, when it comes to housetraining, they can "hold it" longer, too. Simple training commands like "sit," "down" and "come" can be taught using small food treats and praise. Remember: It takes about four weeks of repetition for your dog to create a habit, so don't slack off the education! Include several short training experiences every day for at least a month when you're teaching a new trick or behavior. Still frustrated? Make sure your dog, no matter his age, has plenty of exercise and safe chew toys so that she can best focus on the task at hand.

THE PAINTED TURTLE HOSTS HAWAIIAN BEACH BARBECUE
Annual Fundraiser Supports Sending Children with Serious Medical Conditions to Camp for Free
The Painted Turtle's North Los Angeles County Regional Advisory Board will host its annual barbecue fundraiser on Saturday, September 17 at The Painted Turtle camp in Lake Hughes.
"Some Santa Clarita residents have heard about The Painted Turtle but have never been able to see what really goes on there. This is their chance to EXPLORE AND LEARN about the incredible non-profit that is in their own backyard."

Santa Clarita community members are invited to attend this festive celebration that offers an exclusive tour of the campground, delicious food and cocktails, live music from The Hit Machine and a boisterous live and silent auction with prizes ranging from a ride in the Goodyear Blimp to trips, a Founders Membership at Organic Sweat Shack and autographed sports memorabilia. All proceeds from the event will benefit The Painted Turtle camp for children with serious medical conditions.
From its adaptive programming to its hospital outreach program, The Painted Turtle empowers children with life-threatening illnesses to gain independence and build a community where they are not alone. Since 2004, The Painted Turtle has provided year-round, life-changing experiences for over 41,000 children and their families. With the support of donors and fundraisers like this one, campers and families are always able attend free of charge.

"We are excited to once again open our wooden gates to the community," said Chris Butler, chief executive officer of The Painted Turtle. "We're proud to be a part of the Northern Los Angeles community and are grateful to our Regional Advisory Board for hosting an event that helps us engage our neighbors and show them the magic we do here at The Painted Turtle."
The Painted Turtle is a member of the Serious Fun Children's Network, an international family of camps founded by Paul Newman. The only medical camp of its kind in California, The Painted Turtle serves over 70 different medical illnesses for children. The organization's year-round, state-wide programming strives to give kids the opportunity to celebrate the simple joys of childhood.

"The annual barbecue is something I look forward to every year," said Tom DiPrima, co-chair of the North Los Angeles Regional Advisory Board for The Painted Turtle. "Between the incredible food, cocktails, auction items and gorgeous scenery of camp, guests are guaranteed to have a great time while donating to a worthy cause. Some Santa Clarita residents have heard about The Painted Turtle but have never been able to see what really goes on there. This is their chance to explore and learn about the incredible non-profit that is in their own backyard."

The Painted Turtle's mission is to provide a year-round, life-changing and authentic camp experience for children with chronic and life-threatening illnesses. The Painted Turtle supports children's medical needs, inspires them to reach beyond their illness and provides care, education and respite for their families. All campers and families attend free of charge. Tickets to the event and more information are available online.
