Viniyoga Embraces Function Over Form to Heal
Viniyoga is a tradition which has its roots in ancient teachings dating back thousands of years. The sanskirt word "vini" is defined as "appropriate application," understood to mean adaptation and modification applied to every movement in the body. It is unique due to the approach to breathing in relationship to the spine and how every movement is synchronized with the breath. Through these techniques, the mind will become more focused, the body will relax, there will be a shift in energy level and the spine, our fountain of youth, will re-establish normal fluid and increased range of motion.

There is no "perfect" or one-size-fits-all asana in Viniyoga. Unlike having to force your body into a pose that places you in a pretzel and does not respect your body structure, the poses are modified to the needs of the individual. Function is over form for the purpose of emphasizing an individual's needs and ability level. Moving in and out of a pose, combined with holding for several breaths, is referred to in the Viniyoga world as "repetition and stay." Repetition is useful for warming up the body, followed by "staying" to build strength. Through the appropriate application that meets the needs of the individual, the science of Viniyoga is a time-tested, effective technique. This practice has been found to be especially helpful with chronic pain, arthritis, fibromyalgia and anxiety. Group asana classes are suitable for beginning to intermediate practitioners wanting a healing, therapeutic yoga practice which will build strength, nourish the body, increase flexibility and improve circulation.

Latest on Senior Nutrition & Hunger Issues
The science and research on Senior Nutrition changes on a regular basis thanks to breakAthroughs in geriatrics, nutrition and disease management. Recent key findings include:
Studies showed that formal meal programs prevent further declines in nutritional risks among seniors. Malnutrition leads to increased hospital length of stay, complications, hospital readmission, early institutionalization and decreased survival times. Malnutrition is much more difficult to correct in the elderly than with younger adults. Older people are less likely than younger ones to show signs of malnutrition and nutrient malabsorption. Studies with specific subjects showed that 40 to 50 percent were malnourished and under-nutrition is estimated at 55 to 61 percent in hospitalized patients. These estimates are in the same range of those that were cited by the American Dietetic Association in its Congressional testimony (35 to 85 percent of seniors in the care of others are at risk for under- or malnutrition). Seniors need assistance with food shopping, especially senior men. Years of experience as a nurse did not seem to positively influence knowledge about nutrition, which was best improved by specific training.
