Older Adults are not Immune to Stress
Four effects of stress on older adults and tips to help them cope

Heart Disease: Stress causes the body to release hormones that elevate heartbeat and breathing. It raises blood pressure and cholesterol levels, putting older adults at risk for heart attack or stroke. Sudden, intense stress can cause instant heart attacks in older adults. Chronic stress that's not managed in healthy ways can cause permanent damage to the heart.
Anxious Stomach: Stomach problems are one of the most common effects of stress. Hormones released as a result of stress also enter the digestive tract, interfering with digestion. These hormones decrease antibody production and have a negative effect on the gut. Older adults experience a decline in their stomach lining due to age. This puts them at a greater risk for experiencing symptoms of an anxious stomach - such as heartburn, constipation and diarrhea - due to stress.
Weight Gain: Chronic stress has been linked with weight gain. Again, the hormones released during a stressful event, mainly cortisol, increases sugars in the bloodstream. High levels of cortisol can increase appetite and trigger the person to reach for "comfort foods." Stress also changes the way the body metabolizes carbs, fat and protein and can result in the body storing fat around the belly. Both result in weight gain.
Poor Sleep: Stress contributes to sleep problems in older adults. It impacts both sleep duration and quality.
Although stress cannot be avoided, the following lifestyle changes can help older adults reduce and cope with stress. Consider exercising daily, practicing meditation, eating a healthy diet and reducing caffeine consumption.
Another tip to help older adults cope with stress is to partner with Visiting Angels of Santa Clarita. Providence Holy Cross Medical Center Offers
Latest Technology for Enlarged Prostate

Procedure Guards Against Sexual Side Effects, Incontinence
Half of men in their 50s suffer enlargement of the prostate gland, a progressive condition that initially is annoying and frustrating, but can lead to significant lifestyle challenges.
Providence Holy Cross Medical Center, serving the
Santa Clarita Valley since 1964, is the only local hospital to provide aquablation, a state-of-the-art robotic procedure to treat men with enlarged prostates. The condition can cause symptoms including urgent urination, poor urinary flow and can lead to incontinence.
Aquablation is minimally invasive, using a powerful water jet - nearly the speed of sound - to remove excess prostate tissue. With real-time ultrasound and direct vision through a tiny camera inserted through the urethra, the robot controls the tissue removal. Studies show the procedure is safe and highly effective and guards against complications including sexual side effects and incontinence. Most cases are covered by Medicare.
Daniel Brison, MD, a urologist with Facey Medical Group/Providence Holy Cross, performed the first aquablation at the hospital and has since performed many more successful surgeries. He is currently training colleagues to use this revolutionary technology.

Which Vaccines are Essential for Seniors?
With all the recent coverage about COVID 19 and the various vaccines, we're likely all suffering vaccine fatigue. However, there are other vaccines that doctors often recommend as we age and it's important to consider taking these shots in order to protect yourself...and your loved ones.
Flu: Older adults are at a higher risk for developing serious complications from the flu, such as pneumonia. The flu is easy to pass from person to person. To ensure flu vaccines remain effective, the vaccine is updated every year and needs to be taken yearly.
Pneumonia: A serious infection that spreads from person to person by air, Pneumococcal disease, often causes pneumonia in the lungs and it can affect other parts of the body. There are two pneumococcal vaccines: PPSV23 and PCV13. According to the CDC, adults who are age 65 and older should get the PPSV23 vaccine. Some older adults may also need the PCV13 vaccine. Talk with your health care professional to find out if you need both.
Shingles: Shingles is caused by the same virus as chickenpox. If you had chickenpox, the virus is still in your body and could become active again and cause shingles. Healthy adults age 50 and older should get vaccinated with the shingles vaccine, which is given in two doses. You should get a shingles shot even if you have already had chickenpox, the chickenpox vaccine, or shingles, received Zostavax, or don't remember having had chickenpox.
Common side effects for all these vaccines are mild and may include pain, swelling or redness where the vaccine was given. Before getting any vaccine, talk with your doctor about your health history, including past illnesses and treatments, as well as any allergies. It's also a good idea to keep your own vaccination record, listing the types and dates of your shots, along with any side effects or problems.

Swelling & Pain in Feet & Ankles During Pregnancy
During pregnancy, many women experience swelling and pain in their feet and ankles which can lead to fallen arches, heel and arch pain and spider veins. This can be prevented with physical therapy - but don't wait until it's too late, especially as it's generally covered by insurance.
During pregnancy, fallen arches occur due to excess swelling, causing the ligaments in the feet to stretch to a point where it no longer can rebound, resulting in wider and flatter feet. This leads to an increase in shoe size.
Heel and arch pain is caused from the excess swelling on the feet and weight gain, placing more pressure on the plantar fascia, which attaches to the heel bone and extends to the ball of the foot. The plantar fascia is located where the arch is - and more flattening will cause more pain.
Physical therapy treatment includes massage, laser, ultrasound heat, soothing compression and wraps. These treatments are safe and not harmful to your baby.
