Brighten Up the Backyard before the Heat of Summer
Select from these SCV-Happy Plants
June, 2005 - Issue #8
Let's face facts: Santa Clarita weather and soil aren't the perfect combination for a succulent English garden. Instead of fighting against nature, work with it. The following plants can all be grown successfully in Santa Clarita, and without a ridiculous amount of care. Choose your favorites and get planting!

Dianthus
Full Sun to Light Shade/Regular Water

There are over 300 shades of Dianthus. This plant's attractive green mat coverage make it a good choice for larger areas. Light, fast-draining soil is best.

Bougainvillea
Full Sun/Moderate to Regular Water

A hardy plant native to the hot climate of South America, Bougainvillea's shrubby vines are home to the brightly shaded papery bracts. The plant's vigorous growing pattern is especially useful when faster results are desired.

Geranium
Afternoon Shade/Regular Water

Hardy plants with long-lasting blooms, Geraniums are lovely as border pieces or as accents to rock gardens.

Hydrangea
Partial Shade/Regular Water

The large, bold leaves of Hydrangea clusters are as beautiful in the yard as in an arrangement inside the home. Use singly, massed, or in patio tubs. Hydrangeas grow quickly.

Star Jasmine
Light Shade/Regular Water

These climbers bear deliciously fragrant blossoms in early summer, and are considered a very versatile plant. Star Jasmine can be trained as ground or wall cover.
