Bee Hotels & Bug Snugs
Small Structures, Big Impact for Santa Clarita Gardens
Those charming wooden structures filled with bamboo tubes and drilled logs aren't just garden decor - they're important habitats for native pollinators. Bee hotels and bug snugs provide safe nesting spaces for beneficial insects, supporting healthier landscapes throughout the Santa Clarita Valley.
Bee hotels are designed for native, solitary bees like mason and leafcutter bees. Unlike honeybees, they don't live in hives or produce honey. Instead, they nest in small cavities in wood or hollow stems. As natural nesting areas disappear due to development and manicured landscaping, bee hotels help fill the gap. These gentle pollinators are incredibly efficient - often pollinating plants more effectively than honeybees - and many native plants can only be pollinated by native bees. The result? Healthier flowers, stronger native plants and more productive vegetable gardens.
Bug snugs serve a similar purpose for beneficial insects like ladybugs and lacewings. These helpful garden insects feed on aphids and other pests, reducing the need for chemical pesticides - a win for people, pets, pollinators and our local watershed. Adding one is simple. Install the structure three to six feet off the ground in a sunny, dry location. Pair it with native and drought-tolerant flowering plants and avoid pesticide use. To encourage pollinator-friendly landscapes, SCV Water offers a $50 rebate when customers install a qualifying bee hotel through the Lawn Replacement Program, making it even easier to support biodiversity at home. In a region focused on water-wise landscaping, bee hotels and bug snugs are small additions that make a big impact - helping build resilient gardens that work with nature.

The Garage Door Safety Check Most Homeowners Skip
Your garage door is probably the largest moving part in your home - and one of the most overlooked. A little attention now can prevent a costly repair later, and more importantly, keep your family safe.
Test your auto-reverse. Place a roll of paper towels flat on the ground in the path of the door. When the door contacts the roll, it should immediately reverse. If it doesn't, or if it hesitates, your auto-reverse mechanism needs attention. This feature exists to protect children and pets, so don't skip this one.
Check your safety sensors. The two small devices near the bottom of your door tracks send an invisible beam across the opening. While the door is open, wave a broom handle through the beam. The door should refuse to close. If it closes anyway, your sensors are misaligned or failing and should be serviced right away.
Listen and watch. A healthy garage door is relatively quiet and moves smoothly. Grinding, scraping or jerking motion are signs that rollers, springs or the track need lubrication or replacement. Catching these early is far less expensive - and less inconvenient! - than an emergency repair.
Most garage doors last 15 to 30 years, but the hardware, including springs, cables and openers wear out sooner. If your door is slowing down or struggling, it may be time for a tune-up or a conversation about replacement.
