Beach Vibes
July, 2020 - Issue #190

Few things are more healing than a deep, salty breath of ocean air first thing in the morning - and just 45 minutes up the beautiful Highway126 - Channel Islands Harbor is the coastal getaway close enough to remind SCV locals that life's always a beach.

This tranquil vacation home, owned by Santa Claritans, backs up to the channel, making the custom-designed home feel more like your own personal slice of shoreline. If you step inside, you may never want to leave, but if you do decide to stretch your legs, it's just a short trip to the pup-friendly Silver Strand State Beach. This Channel Islands gem has got it all.

The soothing great room sets the tone for the rest of the house with a white-grey color palette and coastal blue accents. Thoughtful touches - like a tasseled cream throw from Refined Vintage Boutique (505-7175) and round table decor - add dimension and texture to an otherwise neutral backdrop. The result is a cozy beach aesthetic reminiscent of white-sand beaches and year-round blue sky days.

Openness and natural light are central elements of a beach aesthetic, and this beauty has both in spades. The fluid and open floor plan allows natural light to sweep through the lower level, while bare windows maximize the sunshine and create a pared-back modern feel. Add a plush selection of comfy, sand-colored fabrics, and the result is an inviting California casual style - without sacrificing sophistication.

Charming accents lend personality to the space while celebrating the natural materials and colors of oceanside living. On the white brick hearth, a "Daydream Believer" jute bag from Refined Vintage Boutique makes a cheery home for seasonal blooms, and a pair of framed photographs captures the essence of summer without straying from the color palette. In the room's center, shiplap surrounds the fireplace, brightening up the mantle and adding more classic white.

"The goal for this home was to have a fresh beach vibe without the standard beach decor," says designer Rebecca Rollins-Garcia of Rebecca Rollins Interiors. "We wanted a modern look with a light and bright approach." The beautifully customized pool table - with cerulean felt and grey wood exterior - is a perfect representation of that purpose. It provides a surprising pop of color while staying on palette with the calming greys, whites and soft blues.

Layering textures is another way to make a room more dynamic - without stepping outside the palette - and this dining room is a perfect example from top to bottom. The weathered wood ceiling and exposed beams are a defining characteristic of this space, and they mirror the lines in the herringbone tile floor to create one harmonious look, even when using completely different materials.

The dark wood farmhouse table is an elegant statement piece, especially when set against a room full of light colors. Cross-back vineyard chairs creates a nice contrast with a lighter, sunkissed wood color and a simple floralscape makes the perfect centerpiece.

"We wanted to create an open and airy kitchen," Rebecca explains, "so we removed a lot of cabinets and added exposed shelving to create more space and achieve the look." Keeping with the layered texture style, the kitchen brings in new, white materials: marble-like quartz countertops, wood cabinets and subway tile backsplash. Stainless steel appliances and clean metal fixtures modernize the room for a beach kitchen that invites you to pull up a chair.

Seasonal decor has a special place in our hearts. The American flag hand towels, Volcano Candle and white heart-shaped bowl - all from Refined Vintage Boutique - add a patriotic flare that makes it feel like the best days of summer have arrived.

With a gorgeous deck overlooking the channel, the view from this beach house is nothing short of heavenly. A quick walk down the steps takes you to the channel, so you can spend afternoons with your feet in the water and your head in the clouds. If you need your own beach getaway to get lost in this summer, you might just be in luck - because this one is available for short-term rental. There's more to explore at this house by the sea, and we hear this summer is going to be a good one for getaways.
