What We Love
Challenges, Embraced
March, 2019 - Issue #174

HISTORICAL PIECES
"My armoire was a gift from my mother from 40 years ago; it's over 200 years old. She saw it in France and had it shipped home, she loved it so much," says homeowner Shelly Whelchel.

NEW DESIGN WITH VINTAGE IN MIND
The stunning chandeliers in the master suite were selected from a local store.
"I was shopping with my dad and he said, 'These are great, I'm buying them for you!' I was so grateful. They're gorgeous and have a lot of personality," says the homeowner.

JOYOUS APPLICATIONS
OF COLOR
No color palette is poppier than this one, with spunky shades of aqua, lemon balm, rose and kelly green.

HANDCRAFTED TREASURES
The homeowner is an accomplished artist who, among other things, paints and makes dream catchers. Her own artwork graces each room of the home. Much of what's not created by her still has a textured, handcrafted feel that makes the whole home feel welcoming and alive.

SMART USE OF SPACE
"This room was such a challenge to decorate because it is so big and narrow. We used curtain panels, strategic angling of furniture and a plan to treat it like a New York apartment space to give it the right feel," says Whelchel. "Because the windows in the sitting room are so high, since the 'step down' was removed by a previous owner, we had to get creative."

SPACE FOR EVERYTHING
"This funky house was built in the '80s and had at least one remodel before we bought it," says the homeowner. "It's big and narrow, with no dividers, even between the master bathroom and the bedroom." The upside is that there are numerous niche areas to define with often dramatically-different functional decor.
