Moments that made Laser Eye Surgery a No-brainer

I had just touched the goose-egg sized bump above my eyebrow without wincing when I gashed my knee on the side of my nightstand in a sorry pursuit to find my glasses at 2am. Add to that the painfully-stubbed toe I acquired while dashing to grab my 10 month old, who decided to show off her pre-walking skills at exactly the same time I was fishing a contact lens out of my weary eye, and you can see why mommyhood is a full-contact sport.

And, just like any athletic endeavor, it's easier to participate when your opponent (Baby!) can't grab your glasses off your face and then stab you in the eye with them.

I knew I needed Lasik when I did the math. Balancing kids, a husband, career and house meant that every minute of the day was precious - and that I spent about 15 of them (Almost two hours a week!) cleaning and fussing with contact lenses. My husband, of course, did a different kind of math and came to the same conclusion. What we'd spend on contacts, solutions, glasses and optometrist appointments over the next eight to 10 years cost more than top-notch laser eye surgery.

Even my over-tired mommy mind knew that it was a no-brainer.

Which had me wondering: What made Lasik a no-brainer for folks who weren't suffering baby-induced injuries on the daily? About 20 e-mails later, here's what I found.

Christine's Lasik moment: "I knew I had to get my eyes done when I couldn't find glasses I liked. I became more and more depressed with each pair I tried on. By the 15th, I said, 'Forget it. I feel ugly in all of them. Tell me about Lasik.'"

Robert's Lasik moment: "My coworkers started a softball league. I felt like an idiot out there in glasses with those little clip-on sunglasses things. I could never do contacts; they always hurt my eyes after a while. So, yeah - I did it for softball!"

Tim's Lasik moment: "I'll be the guy who admits that I had laser eye surgery done for a woman. She was younger, I was older, it didn't last. Now that I think about it, better eyesight is the only good thing that came out of that relationship!"

Sara's Lasik moment: "An earthquake! It was at night and my glasses were in the bathroom. I got the kids up and in the doorways, which wasn't super easy. I was walking blind. It wasn't a big one, but it was a wakeup call for me - I didn't grow up in California and didn't know what to expect. Now we have a week's worth of food and water stored and Mommy has Lasik! I can't imagine how hard it would be to cope in a real emergency without my sight."

Matt's Lasik moment: "I knew I wanted Lasik when I was 10. I was teased because of my glasses. Contacts made it better in high school but they still were a pain. Late-night studying made my eyes dry and sore. I told my parents that I had to have Lasik before the craziness of college. I thought they'd say no, but they agreed."

Five years later, I still count Lasik as the smartest thing I've ever done for myself. My eyesight is still perfect and yes, parenting is still a full-contact sport.
